My kids and I had the chance to visit California Adventure’s new Cars Land attraction at California Adventure. We are big fans of California Adventure . . . it’s a Disney park adjacent to Disneyland and it really is my favorite of all the Disney parks. It is a very Pixar-centric park, and in my opinion it’s the best park for small kids because there are so many rides catering to them, and because the lines tend to be shorter than the Magic Kingdom. It’s also a park that is “doable” with four kids and only one adult. My kids already love going there for the Ariel, Monsters Inc, and Toy Story rides, and the Bug’s Life area is like a mini amusement park for the preschool set. I’ve been really excited to see what Cars Land would be like.
I’ll admit, we’ve been seeing commercials for Cars Land on tv and I’ve been skeptical that it would look like the renderings they’ve been showing. You guys . . . IT DOES. It’s wild. It really does feel like you’ve been transported to a scenic desert. In classic Disney fashion, every single detail has been created to transport you into radiator springs, right down to the trashcans.
Here are a few of our favorite spots in Cars Land:
Mater's Junkyard Jamboree
My kids really loved Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree. It's the perfect ride for the preschool set, with a height requirement low enough that even my three-year-old could ride. It's fun and fast, but not scary.
The Cozy Cone Motel is a theme park foodie's paradise. Each cone bears a different culinary delight, from pickle-flavored popcorn to churros with chocolate dip. Check out the Red's Apple Freeze for a refreshing frozen treat, or the vegetarian chili in a bread cone for a filling snack.
The kids also had fun on Luigi’s Flying Tires, which is similar to bumper cars except that the tires are propelled by air, sort of like a human air hockey game. This is another fun ride for the whole family.
The real pièce de résistance in Cars Land is the Radiator Springs Racers ride. I think this will quickly become one of the most popular rides of all the Disney parks. It is a bit intense so it may not be suitable for younger kids, but it's a very fun, action-packed ride that combines the immersion experience of most Disney rides along with the thrill of a roller coaster.
If you are planning a visit, check out the Verizon app for Disneyland, which includes maps, line estimates, and even menus to each restaurant in the park.
