There are several ways to create healthy-looking skin with cosmetics (foundations, tinted moisturizers, bronzers, primers, BB creams, to name a few), but I would be remiss If I didn’t write about how to create healthy skin the right way.
We’ll definitely touch on the above-mentioned cosmetics in future posts, but today I want to chat about what truly makes your skin glow, and that is taking excellent care of yourself. All the tinted moisturizer in the world won’t create the luminous look of a face whose body is happy and healthy. Here are 6 daily tips that I swear by for creating healthy, glowing skin.
Drink Green Smoothies
Just like the rest of your body, your skin thrives on vitamins and minerals. Green smoothies are a simple and fast way to get your daily recommendation of vitamins such as Vitamins A and C, and drinking one every morning will get your skin glowing in no time. Two of my favorites are the Glowing Green Smoothie and our personal family favorite, the Whoorlie.
I know, I know. Between careers and meetings and parenting and playdates and errand-running, it's hard to find the time to exercise, right? WRONG. See that half-asleep mug above? Notice the time? And the dot on AM? Yep, folks, this is what time I get up to exercise. Do I want to wake up at 5:45 a.m.? Not really. Do I feel like a million bucks after I'm finished working out at 7 a.m.? Yep, pretty much. I can honestly say that I've never finished a workout and thought, "gee, I wish I hadn't done THAT this morning." Bottom line - if you take good care of your body, your skin will reflect it. Regular exercise, folks. Just do it.
Biotin is a great supplement for healthy skin, hair, and nails. Looking to grow your hair at a faster rate? Get thee some Biotin STAT. (Um, I'm also not a physician, so I probably shouldn't be saying things like "STAT," and of course, check with your doctor before starting any supplement.) Also, if supplements aren't your thing, you can eat biotin-rich foods, such as cauliflower, salmon, carrots, bananas, soy flour, cereals, and yeast.
Water, water, water. Although drinking water alone won't improve the skin's appearance, it's a much better alternative than most other drinking options. Stop drinking soda, people. It's horrible for you. (Stepping off soap box.)
37-year-old Sarah James would like to tell 15-year-old Sarah James to lay off the baby oil and pool time. Alas, what's done is done, but I never leave the house now without SPF 30 sunscreen all over my face, neck and hands. (The Olay sunscreen pictured above is great for sensitive skin types. It's my go-to daily sunscreen.)
Probably stating the obvious here, but the skin is your largest organ, and if you are regularly sustaining it with soda and potato chips, it might not look optimal. Steer clear of processed foods, and fill your diet with fruit, vegetables, and lean protein. (Although, I'm certainly a fan of everything in moderation. Don't deprive yourself of a treat now and again!)
An avid blogger, Sarah James can be found regularly contributing her musings on style, beauty and parenting at her personal blog, Whoorl.com, and has been featured on several television shows and print publications. She lives in Southern California with her husband, 6-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter.

I’ve heard about biotin for years. I’m inclined to give that, or maybe sea buckthorn (I’ve read that it might encourage your healthiest hair and nails). I eat pretty healthy already, but I like the idea of getting a little extra oomph from a supplement.
About the biotin – lozenges seems to be popular from what I can see. How are they on the “Tasty Index?” Tolerable?

When I work out, I have to towel the sweat off so often that I hope there’s some kind of exfoliating benefit to that too. You are right on with your recommendations. Gotta look into Biotin, stat. Oh and the sunscreen. Being Latina, I never really thought it was important, which is just ignorant, I know. Now I have lovely brown spots on my cheeks from my last pregnancy. I don’t forget the suncreen now.

My recommendation? Get plenty of sleep. Nothing makes me look more ragged than not getting enough rest.
Janette, absolutely! And since I work at at 6:00 a.m., that means lights out at 9:30 p.m. for me.

How much biotin do you take?

Liz and Sarah – I take a hair, nails and skin supplement from Trader Joe’s that has 400mcg of Biotin in it.
