All this back-to-school nonsense is old news to our family. Addie’s been back since July 31st and, while it was a bummer not having her around in August to do things with us, there are certainly some perks that come along with having her back in school.
One of them being the one-on-one time I get with Vivi; with two kids so far apart in age they are essentially each being raised as an only child. I had so much time with Addie, I worried I’d never have the same relationship with Vivi. The few hours a day Addie is at school lets me focus on Vivi and spend time with her one on one; it makes all of us happier knowing we have such personal relationships with each other. Addie comes home from school excited about what she’s learned, eager to share it with Vivi. While Vivi won’t understand the complexities of compound sentences or multiplication just yet, it helps Addie understand them better just by talking about them and explaining them to her little sister. It’s also brought up some new conversations about the behavior of others, and the expectations we have of her and how to deal with the more colorful characters in her classroom. While having one less voice bossing me around and asking me a hundred questions before lunch time is nice, there are much more meaningful reasons I love having Addie back in school.
