After watching the movie Pitch Perfect, and hearing The Simple Mind’s 8o’s anthem from The Breakfast Club I was immediately transported back in time to the first time I saw The Breakfast Club. I can still smell the Aqua Net and White Rain scented air and taste the lip smackers bubble gum lip balm combined with Dr. Pepper and buttery microwave popcorn laced with m&m’s.
I remember the escalating heartbeat as we watched Bender, Claire, Allison, Brian and Andrew race the halls to beat Principal Dick Bender back to the library. I remember groaning at Allison’s cereal and pixie stick laced sandwich, trying Claire’s lipstick trick, and gasping and blushing when Judd Nelson was under the table looking up Molly Ringwald’s skirt.
Most of all, I remember the swell in my heart, the romantic adrenaline rush that accompanied “Don’t You Forget About Me” as it crescendoed in the background and then the exhalation of 4 teenage girls breaths as Judd Nelson’s fist pumped in the air.
Even now, when that song comes on the radio – I’m whisked back in time. That movie and song resonated so deeply with my generation that we made it our Senior Anthem, and it was heard at every party, every river floating trip and even at graduation.
In a fit of melancholy and memories, I took to Facebook to ask what the most epic movies of the 80′s were – the ones that defined something about the 80′s and resonated deeply, the movies that to this day still take us back to the first time and will forever and always be classics.
These are the 8 movies that defined the 80′s – according to my Facebook friends.
