Summer Sets, Fall Rises

Oregon summers are fleeting. As soon as the dawn of shorts-wearing weather peaks over the horizon, I blink, and it’s back to cardigans and scarves. It makes my native-Texan head explode, quite frankly. I’m used to five-month-long summers, bookended by springs and summers with highs still in the 80s.

For Labor Day weekend, we pressed the pause button on our renovating-and-unpacking routine to enjoy summer one last time. We’re a spontaneous family anyway, so it felt like “us” to quickly grab our swim bag, put the grill in the trailer, and head to a nearby lake for a final swim. It was much needed.

I never appreciated summer until I moved to Oregon. Most of my life I’ve either lived in Texas or the Mediterranean area of the world; both places serve up heat and humidity like it’s going out of style. Spring and fall have typically been more my preference.

But now I’m digging the summer, six weeks long though it is here. And quite frankly, I’m a bit sad to say goodbye. But my salve is that the next season is the fall, and it just can’t get much better than that.

Pumpkin spice lattes, colorful scarves, and college football — can I get a hallelujah? There’s much to be thankful for, and like my Voices colleage Karen Walrond reminded me, gratitude for the little things is key to a happy life. Heck, my dear friend Ann Voskamp wrote a whole life-changing book about it.

So to shift my mind from summer to fall — and to give thanks for the change in season — I’ve enjoyed scrolling through some fall favorite photos on Flickr. My visually-oriented self revels in the beauty of this most magical season.

So while I sadly wave goodbye to a great summer, I can pretty easily turn around and greet autumn with a smile. At least it’s not yet winter.

What’s your favorite season?
