Fun For The Whole Family:Retro Toys For Your Modern Tot

By Morgan Shanahan |

Spending the weekend with my sister and her family, I was gifted a stunning set of earrings by my oldest niece:

SHRINKY DINKS! Be still my inner-child. It’s like my new jewels opened a flood gate of memories of awesome toys from my childhood that I’d forgotten existed. Enter an afternoon full of reminiscing about the precious playthings that caused some of the most epic sibling battles of my youth, and the retro-fabulous TV commercials that went with them.

Only, my 70s-born Sister and Brother-in-law and my 80s-born husband and self have been debating which decade some of these brilliant inventions belong to (feel free to weigh in). Whether Disco or Aquanet was wafting through the air  - below are some of my favorite old school toys that might just manage to still thrill your kiddos in this digitally addled age. Shall we?

Possibly my all-time favorite, and the toy that launched this trip down memory lane, these creative goodies are just as fun now as you remember them! [BUY SOME!]

Lite Brite and Shrinky Dinks were 2 of my favorites!

  2. Jennifer says:

OMG what a rush of nostalgia. I used to LOVE shrinky dinks!

  3. Anne Louise Bannon says:

Okay – you asked for this. ViewMaster, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys and the Rock Tumbler all date back to the ’60s, probably even the ’50s. My brother always got the cool toys, like the Lincoln Logs and I finally bought myself the Rock Tumbler as an adult and was appalled at how noisy it was. Lite Brite and Shrinky Dinks were from the ’70s. Don’t know about the Pogo Ball, Speak and Say was the ’80s, and the Gross Out Balls were also the late ’60s, early ’70s, I’m guessing because that style of artwork was popular then.

Hahaha, I love it! I think Pogo is 80s because of the ad, but I do dissent on Madballs – I think those are pure 80s as well!

shrinky dinks ROCK. I also loved the marble thing with the wooden blocks? I have no idea what it was called? AND CYLINDERS THAT MAKE MOO COW SOUNDS.

  5. [...] Over the weekend my sister, brother-in-law, Scott took a stroll down memory lane thanks for a pair of Shrinky Dink earrings Eva made for me. The result was this Babble post recounting eleven retro toys you loved that are fit for your modern tot. [...]

  6. Suzanne says:

Yes, Grumbles, I had the wooden marble blocks too – we just called them Marble Blocks. I was super jealous of my friends fancy plastic marble tracks. I’ve been stalking some Lincoln Logs on eBay now for months, since I think the new ones are plastic and that’s just plain wrong.
