All this back-to-school nonsense is old news to our family. Addie’s been back since July 31st and, while it was a bummer not having her around in August to do things with us, there are certainly some perks that come along with having her back in school.
One of them being the one-on-one time I get with Vivi; with two kids so far apart in age they are essentially each being raised as an only child. I had so much time with Addie, I worried I’d never have the same relationship with Vivi. The few hours a day Addie is at school lets me focus on Vivi and spend time with her one on one; it makes all of us happier knowing we have such personal relationships with each other. Addie comes home from school excited about what she’s learned, eager to share it with Vivi. While Vivi won’t understand the complexities of compound sentences or multiplication just yet, it helps Addie understand them better just by talking about them and explaining them to her little sister. It’s also brought up some new conversations about the behavior of others, and the expectations we have of her and how to deal with the more colorful characters in her classroom. While having one less voice bossing me around and asking me a hundred questions before lunch time is nice, there are much more meaningful reasons I love having Addie back in school.
Why I Love Back-To-School 1 of 7
It goes way beyond one less person in the house to feed and keep track of.
Her Outfit Choices 2 of 7
Addie's second grade teacher said one of her most favorite parts of her day was what Addie was wearing.
The child can put the most ridiculous outfits together and look amazing. I'll admit, I love seeing what she puts together as well.
(In summer she wears nothing but running shorts and tank tops. All the time.)
Bus Stop Reunions 3 of 7
When Vivi isn't napping I take her out to Addie's bus stop to greet her sister.
It's easily one of the very best things about Addie being back in school, seeing the two of them run towards each other with open arms after a whole day apart.
Love Notes 4 of 7
Addie writes and leaves each of us love notes during breakfast every so often.
Sister Time 5 of 7
Since the two of them don't see each other all day, they're more than happy to spend the entire afternoon playing with each other. It used to be I had to wait for Cody to get home so he could be a whole new shiny toy for Addie, now Addie is Vivi's shiny new 2:30 pm toy every weekday.
Curated Library Book Selections 6 of 7
Now that she's in third grade she gets to pick TWO! books on library day. She always picks one big chapter book for herself and a funny picture book she can read with Vivi.
*heart goes boom*
New Knowledge 7 of 7
Today as she walked in the door, the first words out of her mouth were "Mom? Can you think of a time I was obstinate?"
I had to distract her long enough to Google 'obstinate' to make sure it actually meant what I thought it meant. (And to make sure she knew what it meant as well!)
