My husband and I are currently on our mad pre-Oscar® Sunday scramble. Ever since we became parents we hardly ever get to watch all the Oscar-nominated films in an actual theater. So once the nominees are announced, we start booking our sitter and head out to watch as many movies as possible, or rent those that are already out.
The real reason for our madness is that we truly love watching the Academy Awards live show and betting on each other on who’s going to win. Also, we hate not being on-the-know if we get invited to an Oscar-viewing party…the shame! We do live in Hollywoodland after all!
This year we’re upping our movie magic game up a notch with the Oscar Experience app, the only official Oscars app. I just downloaded it for free on my iPad and I can now officially feel like an Oscar 2013 geek! I’m way ahead of my husband because, thanks to this app, I have so much information on the nominees, their past Academy Awards nominations and wins that I can make even better-informed guesses when it comes to selecting our winners.
Aside from shaming my husband, here’s how I’ll be using the Oscar Experience app this Sunday, February 24th when the show airs live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood and Highland Center.
Be an Oscars 2013 know-it-all 1 of 6Brush up on everything you need to know about the Oscar nominees before the show and so that you can score big on your picks ballot! Each category lists all the nominees and even gives you a trailer and pictures to watch, and any past Academy Awards nods and/or wins.
All bets are on! 2 of 6The OSCAR Experience app makes it easy for us to pick our winners and even share our picks with our social graphs with an interactive ballot. Each category is beautifully displayed with a box per nominee that includes a link to the movie's trailer. Just click on your pick and your selections will be populated onto your personal and shareable online ballot. If you want to truly get competitive, you can turn on the Play With Friends option to see your Facebook friend's ballot and keep track of who's in the lead the day of the Awards. I can't wait to see how many of my picks actually make the cut and how I rank amongst my friends!
Note that you can must login through Facebook to be able to make selections and they must be made before the start of the show. You can check your ballot on your mobile devices and on Oscar.com.
Staying up-to-date on all the pre-Oscar buzz 3 of 6The "What's New" section is where you can find the latest buzz regarding the Oscars and even recipes to inspire your viewing party menu. Those Easy Brie Bites have called my name!
Almost like being at The Oscars 4 of 6I have to admit I love being an awards show voyeur. I get a thrill out of those unedited moments that can only occur during live TV. Since I worked many red carpets and the backstage for major live awards shows in my past as a TV producer, I love the feeling of being there, albeit through a screen. The backstage meetings, the Red Carpet arrivals, the dresses, the winners' smiles and tears, the off-stage mingling -- all of these moments are what truly make this a spectacular event. The OSCAR Experience app developers must know that because on Oscar Sunday they will deliver more than a dozen live streams through the "Backstage Pass." They promise "the best view of the action" happening all over and around the main stage. I'll definitely be multitasking on Sunday as we watch the show live on ABC and all the red carpet and backstage happenings with our "Backstage Pass."
Pictures! 5 of 6You know that moment when you click on a slideshow or a video playlist and you know you just gave over the next couple of hours of your life? That's exactly what happened to me with the Video and Photos section of the OSCAR Experience app. I relived some of the most beautiful Oscar red carpet moments of years past -- even retro moments like Elizabeth Taylor arriving in a gorgeous white gown. I got lost and so entertained reading the responses to the nominee questionnaires for this year and got a close-up look at the Hollywood glitterati that attended this year's Oscar Nominee Luncheon.
Videos! 6 of 6The videos will put you just in the right Oscars mood, especially the "Seth Gets Ready for the Oscars" playlist where this year's host, Seth MacFarlane, talks movies, Bond, nominees and more in a series of promo spots. And if you really want to avoid getting sucked in for the rest of your day, do not click on the "Memorable Oscar Speeches" playlist. That's 149 videos of the best acceptance speeches from The Oscar's 85 award shows. Okay, click on it, but don't say I didn't warn you.
