The Internet Rallies For Big Bird

I was watching the Presidential debates last night (in all honesty, I was so bored by this one that I was about to fall asleep) when Mitt Romney, seemingly out of nowhere, promised to send Big Bird to the unemployment line.

“I’m sorry Jim. I’m gonna stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m gonna stop other things,” Romney said to Jim Lehrer, longtime host of The News Hour on PBS. “I like PBS, I like Big Bird, I actually like you too.”

But essentially, he promised to fire them.

(Yes, even Big Bird!)

I know that he was using the hapless muppet to illustrate a point — a terrible, terrible point in my opinion — but I’m not here to debate the wisdom of cutting funds to public television. The thought of a world without Downton Abbey and Grover makes me very sad indeed, but I will leave that discussion to the pundits and voice my opinion in the voting booth on November 6.

What I want to talk about is how I, like the rest of the internet, was struck by the absurdity of a presidential candidate picking on a huge yellow bird beloved by millions of children. Right? It’s at times like this that the internet collectively fires up the old Photoshop and mines the situation for as much humor as possible — or, depending on your viewpoint, continually beats a dead horse until it’s simply not funny anymore.

In any case, in the matter of Big Bird vs. Governor Romney, the internet has spoken and I would like to share some of it with you.

Big Bird himself is as innocent as ever -- so there is a happy ending ...so far.
