Go Cyber Monday!

By cecilyk |

I used to love shopping at the mall. Fine, I was 16 at the time, but still… I loved it. I’d spend hours window shopping with girlfriends, generally making fools of ourselves, and believing that I knew what was what. For sure.

Now, I hate it. I avoid the mall as much as humanly possible, only going when I really must get new clothes and for the annual Santa photo for my daughter.

And now the holidays are upon on and HOLY HELL the non-stop ads that are beating down on my daughter’s head (no, I’m not a mother that says no TV allowed, so there ya go) telling her to SHOP SHOP SHOP. She found a toy catalog and has circled and dog-eared it near to death. While we won’t go crazy, we’ll probably get her a couple things on her list, but there is no WAY I’m going in to the mall.

Instead, I’m going to enjoy Small Business Saturday and shop at great local merchants to support local artists, and then I’m going to celebrate Cyber Monday.

My daughter, at a mere six years old, as deemed most Princess stuff “silly”, with two exceptions: Merida of Brave (who’s not a REAL princess, but an archer) and perhaps, maybe, Rapunzel of Tangled. So I’ll be starting at the Disney store.

How cute are these? I try to avoid having her wear a lot of character stuff, but at home these are too adorable to pass up.

Her other obsession right now is a bit harder to include; she’s gone horse crazy (I’m so proud) largely because of a ten year old movie called Spirit, Stallion of the Cimmaron. I love the fact that it’s a movie about animals where the animals don’t talk (instead Matt Damon narrates), but it suffers from one nearly fatal flaw: an utterly horrendous soundtrack by Bryan Adams. OMG.

But nonetheless, I’m trying to get my hands on a ten year old toy from the movie. Yep. Ebay, here I come.

Everything else I’m going to buy I’ll be hitting small local shops.

How about you? Are you hunting for deals outside of the malls and big box stores this year?
