They Were WRONG (Amazing Anti-Bullying Message)Cecily Kellogg
I was eight the first time a boy called me fat. Trust me when I tell you that I was not. Sadly, though, the barb stuck because I knew what fat was. I knew my mother was fat and I knew she was ashamed of it, horribly ashamed, and that she would do anything to stop being fat even if that anything meant spending 30 days only drinking one glass of fruit juice a day. I knew that I should feel bad about my body because of what that one boy said.
To this day I hear his voice, the jeer loud and sharp. It still hurts; more so, even, because I am finally actually fat. And although I fight it with everything I have, well, there it is. I’m ashamed.
Shane Koyczan knows just what I mean. His amazing spoken word poem To This Day rings with the truth of bullying. It’s an amazing piece on its own, but when you add in some incredible animation you end up with an spectacularly beautiful yet wrenching work of art.
Take seven minutes to watch this. It’s worth it. I promise.
