Thinking Blue

A few days before Christmas, we found out that the baby I’m gestating is a boy. After having two girls, my husband and I felt fairly certain that we were destined for a world of pink, so finding out we’re expecting a boy was a bit of a shock. We are very excited about adding a boy to our princess-and-tutu-filled household, and now that I’ve recovered from the surprise I’ve started thinking about all the STUFF I have to get for this new little guy.

The good news is that one of the pricier items, the infant carrier/car seat, that I received for Annabel has a seven year expiration date and is still in great condition. It’s a neutral brown color — one of the few things I own that isn’t pink or purple or covered with girlie patterns. Since that’s one of the first things baby boy will need, I’m relieved I don’t have to get a new one (although I would have had no problem strapping him into a pink seat if that’s all I had!).

When it comes to furniture, the only thing I have that the little guy could reuse is the crib mattress. But, I’m uncertain how long those are good for. I bought it back in 2007 when I was pregnant with Madeline, so two babies have slept on it. I’m thinking that the little guy will probably need/deserve a new mattress. Annabel’s crib converted into her big girl bed, so he’ll be needing a new crib as well. I have a few pieces of white furniture that are currently in the room that will become his, so I’m thinking I will go with a white crib to make the most of what I already have. I’m having fun on pinterest looking for ideas for his room. How did I manage to decorate my girls’ rooms without pinterest?! Ha.

But if there is one area that I am sorely lacking, it’s clothing. With the exception of maybe two or three little onesies, all my baby/kid clothes are very clearly for girls. Annabel loves clothes, specifically dresses and shoes, and I have lots of adorable little things that I will be sad to pack up and pass on. But I think it will be fun to change things up and shop for a boy. I just have to train myself! I walked through the kids’ section in a department store last week and I found myself automatically moving toward the girlie items. I have to start thinking BOY!

After everything I’ve been through with my pregnancies and children, I have a strict policy against buying anything until I make it to 30 weeks gestation. But that’s okay — it gives my inner planner a lot of time to window shop, bookmark, and pin. It’s going to be very fun and very different, but I’m so excited to go down this blue path.

Are you an expecting or new mom that lives in the LA area? I have a pair of tickets to give away to Jayneoni’s Boom Boom Room Baby Room event (you can also buy tickets at this link). It is THE ultimate celebrity parent hang-out before the Golden Globes! I will be speaking during one of the parenting seminars, and Annabel will be there with me, too! I’ve gone the last few years and you don’t want to miss out. To win, just leave a comment below telling me your favorite baby item — especially if it’s something you think I’ll need with my SON! AAAHHH! Winner will be chosen via random.org, contest closes at 9pm PST on Wednesday, January 9. Good luck!
