What To Say Today To People Who Didn’t Vote For Your Candidate, Spam-Style

presidential election 2012It’s down to brass tacks. Voting day. Emotions are running high.

Given the level of nastiness I’ve seen with this election, and how polarized people are, I thought I’d offer a handy guide to how to react to those with whom you vehemently disagree, which means about half of the citizenry of the United States.

I believe it’s important to avoid fisticuffs and to make some effort to prevent fifty percent of your friends and neighbors from feeling like you despise them. The old maxim says that if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. But if I know you, when you hear someone talk about why they voted for the other guy you’ll say something. You can’t help it. We’re from the age of social media after all. We tweet about what we had for lunch and update Facebook with photos of today’s outfits.

So, I say if you can’t say something nice today, just say spam! Blog comment spam writers are skilled in the art of saying something without saying much of anything at all. There’s no real commitment to an ideology there. Nothing extreme that might lead to an unwinnable argument. Comment spammers know how to be concise and diplomatic and offer a minimal measure of kindness, exactly what is called for as we await the results of the 2012 presidential election.

I have culled some of the most appropriate phrases for the next few days from my comment spam file for your use. You may employ any of the following in response to someone who did not vote for your candidate in this election (or who wants to argue why your vote was idiotic). To carry this out in the most effective way possible, choose only one phrase. Say it and then zip it. Just walk away, leaving your opponent somewhat dazed but not injured.
