I’m always proud and happy to share the best part of me: my kiddos. They belong to a community constituted by people who were born with an extra chromosome. Worldwide, over 5.8 million people live with Down syndrome. They don’t “suffer” Down syndrome, they are not Down, they are not disabled. Instead they bring our lives UP, teaching us that “Disability” means instead: “THIS-ability”. A unique way of being able.
As they belong to that small but not any less important community, they belong to the world as well; your world, my world, their world.
Don’t expect them to be magical, angelical or weird. They are real, they are human. They don’t turn their parents into saints, but they do empower them to believe and do their best, out of love. A love, not any different from that you may have for your typical child. It’s still the same love.
Join the celebration. World Down syndrome Day is TODAY! 3.21
