What were you doing in the 90s? Were you starting to use a cellular phone? Were you enjoying the luxury of cable TV and watching the X Files and Twin Peaks? Was the newly invented World Wide Web blowing your freaking mind? Whether you were doing the “running man” to “Baby Got Back” in your Hammer pants or sobbing in the theater to James Cameron’s Titanic, I think we can agree, that decade was “the bomb”! Here are 20 names for baby inspired by the 90s.
, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar
, kicked vampire and demon bootie for seven successful seasons on the WB
in the cult favorite, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
magazine named Buffy the Vampire Slayer
one of the "100 Best TV Shows of All Time," and it has made its way into the world of fandom, as well. Just as Buffy was "chosen" to be a slayer, perhaps your daughter is "chosen" to be named Buffy. Or maybe you've attended one too many Comic-cons.
Touted by many as one of the best tv series of all time, Seinfeld
aired from 1989 to 1998, and is now, luckily for us all, in syndication. Jerry Seinfeld
and Larry David
co-created this show about a fictionalized version of Seinfeld, his best friend George Costanza, his ex-girlfriend Elaine and his neighbor Kramer. And this show coined some of the best catchphrases of the 90's ("No soup for you!"). Well, it seems your spouse or partner was not "spongeworthy" or any other contraceptive-worthy, but the ULTIMATE-worthy, because now you're expecting a baby. Name him after Jerry Seinfeld and may he grow up to be just as funny. Yada, yada, yada.
The elegant Diana
, Princess of Wales, with her style, compassion and that warm, magnetic smile was an international icon, the "world's most photographed woman", and named one of the "100 Most Important People of the 20th Century" by Time Magazine
. "She is remembered for her high profile work and fundraising for numerous charities including the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997, shortly after she died. Is your daughter going to be a do-gooder fit for royalty? Name her Diana.
Dances With Wolves
won 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture in 1990. It also won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture- Drama that same year. It is a story about Union Army Lieutenant John J. Dunbar, who goes into the American frontier to find a military post and his interactions with a group of Lakota Indians. Graham Greene
plays Kicking Bird, the tribe's medicine man, and the father to his white adopted daughter, Stands With a Fist. This movie brought Graham fame and revitalized the Western genre of filmmaking in Hollywood.
Aaliyah Dana Haughton
, known as Aaliyah
, was a recording artist, actress and dancer who performed with Gladys Knight
at 10 and was signed to the Jive Records
label at 12. Her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number
went double platinum and she went on to work with well-known producers Timbaland
and Missy Elliot
, earn a grammy nomination and produce two more successful albums. Sadly, Aaliyah was killed in an airplane crash in 2001, but is remembered for helping to redefine R&B in the 90's, earning her the nickname the Princess of R&B.
, Forrest Gump
taught us that anything is possible. Though Forrest, played by Tom Hanks
, was to have an IQ of only 75, he was an endearing character who was loyal to his friends, had an impressive sense of duty and lived an exciting life witnessing many defining moments of the late 20th Century. "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get." But if you know you're having a boy? Why not name him Forrest, Forrest Gu...ok, I'll stop. Why not hame him Forrest?
William J. Clinton
served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001, prior to which he served as the Governor of Arkansas for two, non-consecutive terms. He was the first president from the baby boomer generation and the third-youngest taking office at the tender age of 46. Though he had a weakness for 22-year old White House interns named Monica Lewinsky, his charisma and communications skills, among other things, won him high public image ratings. Give your son a Presidential moniker fit for "Bubba" and name him Bill
was discovered at a BC Lions Canadian Football League game and the rest is history. Appearing on more Playboy
covers than anyone else ever, Pamela will forever be memorialized in her signature red tank bathing suit, as Baywatch
babe, C.J. Parker. Name your daughter Pamela
, just keep her away, far away, from boys named Tommy with Sony
Kurt Donald Cobain
was the lead singer of the famous grunge band, Nirvana
, the mascot band of Generation X
. Nirvana's huge success came with their second album Nevermind
in 1991. Is your baby-on-the-way treating your uterus like a mosh pit? Throw on "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and name your son Kurt.
made his directorial debut with Reservoir Dogs
in 1992. But it was Pulp Fiction
which earned him critical acclaim and commercial success in 1994 with its pop-culture references and extreme violence. Also, it seemed that everyone I knew at that time had "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" on repeat and looked for every opportunity to talk about a "five dollar milkshake." You left your mark on the 90's, Quentin. And you make fantastic films. We wouldn't be sad if you stopped putting yourself in your own movies, though.
Victoria "Posh" Beckham
was the chic member of the 90's British pop girl group, the Spice Girls
. Posh has not only married the finest man in soccer, but has become an internationally recognized style icon and has gained worldwide respect as a fashion designer. "I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want." I want to know what the hell "zigazig ha" means. My imagination is running WILD.
Lauryn Hill is known for her membership in the hugely popular hip-hop group of the 90's, the Fugees, and also for the success of her amazing solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Her version of "Killing Me Softly" rules, and we can all admit that we've been caught crooning it either in the shower or on the karaoke stage. Come on, admit it (one time, one time). Name your daughter Lauryn, after the 90's Ms. Hill, not the 2013 one, who is currently serving a 3-month sentence for tax evasion.
This Pearl Jam
frontman was born Edward
Louis Severson, III. He traded the formal name for some unbuttoned flannel shirts, long tresses and rocked the 90's as Eddie Vedde
r with the most popular band in the alternative-rock scene. Get grungey man, and name your son Eddie.
Remember Liam Gallagher
and his cool, Brit pop band, Oasis
? Though he was known to be erratic, abrasive and angry, he was voted the "greatest frontman of all time" in a 2010 UK poll for Q
magazine. His much less angry brother Noel, who wrote most of the songs, is probably like, "sigh. nice guys finish last." Well, not really. He's still a wealthy, successful rockstar. I learned to play "Wonderwall" on the guitar and would nonchalantly start playing it, as a party piece, whenever anyone had a guitar lying around. But, then I forgot how to play it. The end.
Remember this crazy 90's, Japanese toy? It was a handheld, virtual pet housed in a small, egg-shaped computer. The owner hatched the pet when the device was turned on and had to care for and raise the pet through several distinct life cycles. The level of care you gave your Tamagotchi affected the pet's outcome. I guess kids benefited by learning responsibility, sort of. But, there wasn't a lot of cuddling or playing fetch involved. So, then what's the point? Nevermind. Tamagotchis are dumb.
Although Alfonso Ribeiro
has been receiving critical acclaim for his acting and Broadway performances since he was a child, he is best known as Carlton Banks
, Will Smith's spoiled, rich cousin on the hit sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
. Though Ribeiro authored a dance instruction book called "Alfonso's Breakin' and Poppin' Book", AND released a rap album even before Will Smith's Fresh Prince, he'll always be remembered for his famous "Carlton Dance."
Vanilla, o.k. how about Robert
Robert Matthew Van Winkle, aka Vanilla Ice, gave us a gift in 1991. He gave us a cheesy "rap" song with lyrics that we would all memorize and then recite down the road, somewhere in our 30's with a similarly-aged group on the dance floor at a Wedding Reception. He gave us "Ice, Ice Baby", and we all still feel a little cool that we remember the lyrics. He gave us more than a song, he gave us wedding dance floor street cred. And he has given you a name idea for your baby boy. Thanks, Ice.
Doc or Martens
boots or "Doc Martens"
were a popular grunge fashion essential in the 90's. With its distinctive, yellow stitching and air cushion sole, the Doc Marten boot was a indie trend favorite, starting out as a favorite among the punk and mod kids of the UK and then a stylish trend in the grunge scene in the U.S. Did you have a pair of "Docs"? Do you STILL have them? Because Doc Marten sales are showing signs of popularity again. And now you're flaunting "vintage". Sweet.
was one of the world's best-selling music artists of all time. As talented as she was stunningly beautiful, she won our hearts with her radiant smile and inspiring, powerful pipes. Though she was popular in the 80's, she became even more popular in the 90's, and her rendition of "I Will Always Love You", the lead single on The Bodyguard
soundtrack became the best-selling single by a female artist in history. Though Whitney died in 2012, her beauty and legend lives on in her music.
Rodeo Drive has never been the same ever since Vivian Ward rocked its world in Pretty Woman. Julia Roberts immediately became one of Hollywood's most sought after actresses and one of America's most loved when the modern day Cinderella story, Pretty Woman hit the box office. She was a huge success in the 90's with her charming rom-coms which included My Best Friend's Wedding, Notting Hill and Runaway Bride. And THOSE FAMOUS LIPS! I've been staring at them since 1990. Name your daughter, Julia. Fit for the pretty little woman she'll surely be.
