Dirk

Try hard not to associate this name with the character of Dirk Diggler from Boogie Nights, because it’s a name fit for nobility. Meaning “ruler of the people,” the name Dirk was bestowed upon seven medieval Counts of Holland. For TV buffs, it might be familiar because of Dirk Benedict, the actor who played Faceman on The A-Team and Starbuck in the original Battlestar Galactica.  Despite all the references, the name has lost its luster a bit, perhaps because of the hard consonants.

Origin

  • dutch: Ruler of the people
  • german: The people's leader
