Some attribute this name to the Greek for “green shoot,” but either way it was associated with the Greek goddess Demeter (associated with fertility.) From 1909 to 1943 it was used sparingly, in the #800 or #900 spot. It went virtually extinct from 1944 to 1981 and then was used every so often again up until 1997. It has been in the double digits since then.
