19 Photos in Praise of a Dad and the Baby Girl He Loves

Father and daughter
Rick and Peony

Moms get a lot of credit for being, well, moms. We schlep our babies around in our bellies for nine months. We birth them. We nurse them. We get pooped, peed and thrown up on. And most of the crappy handmade art projects that bring us tears of joy are made solely with us in mind.

But most dads are no slouches, either. Of course I can really only speak of mine, to whom I still usually make the first phone call each morning, as well the dad of my girls, my husband Rick, whom I will argue until my last breath is the reason my girls’ smiles are as bright as they are.

Rick didn’t just father my girls, he is their daddy through and through. Take a look at these pictures of him with our younger daughter Peony and see if you can’t tell why he makes my heart melt as he makes hers sing:

They say that from the instant he lays eyes on her, a father adores his daughter. Whoever she grows up to be, she is always to him that little girl in pigtails. She makes him feel like Christmas. In exchange, he makes a secret promise not to see the awkwardness of her teenage years, the mistakes she makes or the secrets she keeps.

All fathers are invisible in daytime; daytime is ruled by mothers and fathers come out at night. Darkness brings home fathers, with their real, unspeakable power. There is more to fathers than meets the eye.

Certain is it that there is no kind of affection so purely angelic as of a father to a daughter. In love to our wives there is desire; to our sons, ambition; but to our daughters there is something which there are no words to express.

A father is someone that holds your hand at the fair makes sure you do what your mother says holds back your hair when you are sick brushes that hair when it is tangled because mother is too busy lets you eat ice cream for breakfast but only when mother is away he walks you down the aisle and tells you everything's going to be OK.

Women's childhood relationships with their fathers are important to them all their lives. Regardless of age or status, women who seem clearest about their goals and most satisfied with their lives and personal and family relationships usually remember that their fathers enjoyed them and were actively interested in their development.

A daughter needs a loving, available, predictable father or father figure who can be counted on, whether divorced or at home. She needs his best paternal intentions, even if his efforts occasionally fall short. She needs his maturity and limit setting and sexual oppositeness, so that she can function with confidence in the wider world of adult love and work.

There's something like a line of gold thread running through a man's words when he talks to his daughter, and gradually over the years it gets to be long enough for you to pick up in your hands and weave into a cloth that feels like love itself.
