2012: Our Year In Instagrams

2012: Our Year In Instagrams2012 was an eventful year to say the least. We became parents and had a whole bunch of exciting and challenging “firsts” along the way. Overall, I would have to say that this has been both the best and hardest year I’ve ever experienced so, to commemorate I wanted to share what our year has looked like through the eyes of my Instagram feed…apparently it was filled with quite a few Fern photos. Go figure.

Still pregnant. Giant, puffy, swollen, uncomfortable and very much pregnant. Wishing and praying for an early arrival.

My wish came true and Fern Winter was born three days early, weighing 8 pounds, 7 ounces and being 21.25" long. She was a brow presentation, so we did some hard work getting her out, but together she helped me have the all-natural, water birth I had been preparing and hoping for.

Aside from the bath we took together at the birthing center, Fern didn't have her first bath until the 5th of February almost a month later. Babies don't really get that dirty and mine wasn't a puker so I was fine waiting and just doing wipe-downs along the way. It was love at first bath though - she's always loved the water.

Moving day! We moved to a new house with a baby who was less than 2 months old in the midst of a lot of breastfeeding drama and postpartum hormone craziness. I don't recommend. Apparently we're crazy.

We experienced the worst sleep regression ever...or maybe I'm just used to the sleep depravation now. Either way...Fern was waking up almost every hour and I thought we were going to die from lack of sleep. We tried crying it out and then gave up because I couldn't handle it. And now at almost a year old my baby is still a kind of crappy sleeper. Oh well. Lots of midnight snuggles this year.

I finally take Fern to her first doctor's appointment. Until now she's only met with midwives. We find out that she's in the 90% for height! Future volleyball player?

First laugh! She waited until she was just about 5 months old to grace us with a chuckle, but it was worth the wait. I was starting to think maybe she would never laugh, but she just wanted to do it in her own timing.

First Father's Day! We spent the day at a winery and Fern tasted her first food - a carrot that she gummed on. This was when we were doing "baby led weaning", but that got thrown out the window real quick.

First time swimming! I took Fern to the lakefront swim park near us and she had her first swim. She was like a fish straight away.

First beach trip. A lot of babies hate the feeling of the sand beneath their toes, but Fern loved it. She even loved the cold waves of the Pacific when we let her dip her toes briefly!

August was filled with a lot of nap time struggles. We finally settled into a nap routine where Fern would lay on our bed. It was short lived, but it worked for the time being.

First time at the zoo. Being so little, Fern wasn't super into the zoo, but she did love the black bears - probably because they're giant and easy to see. It didn't hurt that they were playing in their water trough either. She was also a fan of the penguins and her Grammy got her a plush penguin from the zoo shop to commemorate the day.

Crawling! Marley's life got a whole lot more annoying ever since this day.

First plane ride. It was only an hour and a half trip from Portland to San Jose for a hosting engagement I had for Levi's, but it was terrible. I basically never want to fly with this kid again until she's a teenager and can wear headphones or something.

First trip to the pumpkin patch. I always made my husband take me every year since we started dating (10 years!) and couldn't wait until we had a little one to take along. She was more into the other kids there than the pumpkins though.

Fern's first Halloween and she spent it dressed as an adorable pink and grey elephant. This costume was so cozy with it's padded belly. I loved it. We spent Fern's first Halloween at her grandparent's house passing out candy and making camping donuts. Fern liked seeing all the kids dressed up, though she wasn't too fond of wearing a costume herself.

First Thanksgiving. Fern was a fan of Thanksgiving cuisine - everything extra soft for those two tiny teeth of hers. Mashed potatoes, yams, turkey, cranberries...all easy for a baby to chew. It was a feast!

First Christmas tree hunting experience. Although our tree hunt ended in a poop fiasco, the likes of which I had never seen, it was still a fun memory as a family.

We headed to Sisters, Oregon with my parents to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary. It was nice having our parents along to actually make it feel like a relaxing getaway since they helped with Fern. While we were there Fern got to see her first snow and she was definitely into it.

Fern met Santa for the first time. I wasn't sure how she'd react, but it was a fairly good experience. Mostly she just liked pulling his beard. Santa wasn't impressed.

Our first Christmas didn't go exactly the way I had planned, but we learned a lot and still had un watching Fern open her stocking.
