5-Minute Makeup Tips for the Busy Mom

Being a mom of two puts a damper on the time (or lack thereof) that I have to get ready in the morning. It usually takes me so long to get out of the door. Between showering, getting both girls ready, and getting myself dressed, it’s tough to look presentable.

I love doing my makeup, but with very little time, I can’t spend too much time on it. Since having Harlan, I’ve found a way to perfect my makeup routine. I’ve taken the time to find the makeup that I really love. Spending a little bit more money on the makeup products for my face not only helps keep my skin clear, but they also last longer. With the exception of mascara and eyeliner (which I don’t spend much money on), I don’t have to drop into the department store very often to replenish my supply. Because what mom has time to do that on a monthly basis?

When I had Avery, I had to really get things done fast. It literally takes me five minutes from start to finish to complete my makeup look for the day. It’s even easy enough for me to do with one hand at certain times so that I can focus on the kids when they need it.

Take a look at my five-minute makeup routine after the jump!

  • The Four Skin Care Essentials 1 of 23
    The Four Skin Care Essentials
Here are the four pieces I use for my face. Quick and simple!
Get my favorite skin care products: Sue Devitt Silky Blush in Vanuatu for $20, Laura Mercier Mineral Powder for $36 , Smashbox BB Cream for $39, and Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Compact in Pink for $40
  • The All-Important BB Cream 2 of 23
    The All-Important BB Cream
I don't know what in the world I did before BB Cream. BB Cream moisturizes, primes, protects your face, and controls oil. This is the first thing I put on and apply all over my face.
You can get Smashbox BB Cream for $39. Trust me, it's worth the price!
  • The Essential Powder 3 of 23
    The Essential Powder
I like to apply my loose powder before I do my eyes. Some people do it after they do their eyes because of the eye shadow that falls on the cheek. If I notice that eye shadow is on my cheeks I will dab a little bit of powder over it to cover.
Purchase Laura Mercier Mineral Powder for $36
  • Apply Loose Powder 4 of 23
    Apply Loose Powder
Apply powder all over your face with a loose powder brush. (I would highly suggest investing in a good brush and washing it once a week with a tiny bit of gentle soap and hot water!)
  • Apply Blush 5 of 23
    Apply Blush
Apply the blush on your cheek bone going up towards your ear.
You can purchase Sue Devitt Silky Blush in Vanuatu $20
  • Apply Shimmer Brick 6 of 23
    Apply Shimmer Brick
Notice the chaos that is going on in my teeny tiny bathroom right now. This is what it is like on a typical morning for me. I love that most of this makeup routine can be done with only one hand, leaving the other one free for a baby that only wants to be held. ;) For a little bit of extra shimmer, I like to apply the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick over my blush. Apply over the cheekbone for that extra glow.
You can purchase Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Compact in Pink for $40
  • Four Eyes 7 of 23

  • Apply Eyeliner on Upper Lid 8 of 23
    Apply Eyeliner on Upper Lid
Carefully apply the eyeliner on the bottom part of your upper eyelid.
  • Final Eyeliner on Upper Lid 9 of 23
    Final Eyeliner on Upper Lid
Try to get as close to your eyelashes as possible.
You can purchase Sephora Nano Eyeliner in Glitter Brown for $5
  • Apply Eyeliner on Lower Lid 10 of 23
    Apply Eyeliner on Lower Lid
I like to apply eyeliner to the bottom part of my lid for an extra pop of the eye. Apply the liner to the lower inside of the lid in the same color and shade that you used for the upper lid.
  • Pink Shimmer Brick on Eyes 11 of 23
    Pink Shimmer Brick on Eyes
The pink shimmer brick is great because it does double duty. I mix some of the colors and use it as the base of eyeshadow on my eyelids.
You can purchase Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Compact in Pink for $40
  • Apply All Over Lid 12 of 23
    Apply All Over Lid
Apply the base color all over your eyelid.
  • Bronze Shimmer Brick Light Brown 13 of 23
    Bronze Shimmer Brick Light Brown
I love the copper tones on the Bobbi Brown Bronze Shimmer Brick because it is great for blue eyes. The product lasts a long time as well so you won't need to replace it often and you can use it everyday.
You can purchase Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Compact in Bronze for $40
  • Apply on Lower Part of Lid 14 of 23
Apply on Lower Part of Lid
The lighter brown color is applied to the bottom part of my eyelid.
  • Bronze Shimmer Brick Dark Brown 15 of 23
    Bronze Shimmer Brick Dark Brown
The darker brown color is great for a little bit of a dramatic effect and to add dimension.
  • Apply on Crease of Lid 16 of 23
    Apply on Crease of Lid
Depending on the look you want to go for, you can add a lot of the dark brown or just a light application. Apply it with the brush on the crease of your eye. This is also a great way to take your look from day to night without too much trouble. You know, in the rare instance that you get an evening out ;)
  • Apply Like an Arch 17 of 23
    Apply Like an Arch
When you are applying the color to your crease, move the brush in an arch like motion across the eyelid.
  • Applying Mascara 18 of 23
    Applying Mascara
I don't spend a lot of money on mascara because in my experience, the drugstore brand does just as well as the expensive department store brand.
You can purchase Covergirl LashBlast Fusion Mascara in Very Black for $7.99
You can also check out Natalie's mascara recommendations if you would like to try a different brand!
  • A Little Love for Your Lips 19 of 23
A Little Love for Your Lips
My husband bought me this lip gloss palette and I love it. There are so many options of what to wear and you can even mix them together for another look!
You can purchase Bobbi Brown Shimmering Gloss Palette for $60
  • Pick a Color 20 of 23
    Pick a Color
Depending on the look I want to go for that day, I pick a color to my liking and apply. Sometimes my little ones lend a hand when I can't decide!
  • You’re Done! 21 of 23
    You're Done!
Once you are done with your lips, you are complete and ready to go!

  • Time to Enjoy Your Day! 23 of 23
    Time to Enjoy Your Day!
This is the routine that I do everyday. I think I've had it for years. As I became a mom, I had to modify it and it literally takes me five minutes to get it done and get out the door!
