5 Places To Beat The Heat With A Baby

It’s really freaking hot. We’re supposed to see relief soon but you know that the cold front Al Roker is talking about is temporary. It’ll get hot again in a few days and we’ll all be back to sweating ourselves silly.

Heat and babies are a bad combo. I always worry that my daughter is going to overheat and get dehydrated if we stay outside too long. I ply her with water and fruit to keep her fluids up but I still don’t like to spend long periods outdoors when the heat index gets up to 100 or better. (Sidebar: when the did the heat index become a thing? Is it like the wind chill of summer?). Not only to I worry about my kids in that kind of heat, I simply don’t enjoy the sensation of sweat pooling in my bra. Yuck.

I’ve been making the rounds of cool spots to entertain my baby the past few weeks. Click through for 5 of my favorite ways to beat the heat with my baby!

I know, I know, these can be germ factories. But, they're also plenty of fun for a new walker who wants to run around. They're enclosed so it's hard for baby to escape and everything is down low to the ground. During summer camp hours, bigger kids are scarce so it's great fun for baby without the danger of being run over!

  • Libraries 3 of 6

The libraries in my area all have great kids sections with lots of toys and puzzles as well as books. Naptime usually conflicts with planned story times, which is a bummer, but libraries are still cool, fun places to go in summer.

In my area, we have public fountains where kids can play and it's fun for both of my kids! I have to be ready to get wet since bigger kids are usually running all around so I need to stick close by my baby. But the cool spray feels good for everyone. Bonus: our favorite fountain is right by the fro-yo place!

  • Open Gym 5 of 6

Gymnastics studios around here do open gym time where you can pay a small fee and your kids can bounce around on the trampolines and other equipment. I've been doing this with my 5 year old for years and now the baby gets into it too. The place we go has equipment for kids of all ages and abilities so she can play on the mats while her brother bounces on the trampolines!

  • The Movies 6 of 6

Yes, really! Some theatres offer "Mom Matinees" where they show first run movies for grown-ups but keep the lights up and the sound low. I used to go with my son when he was an infant. No one cares if you nurse the baby or walk up and down the aisle to shush a fusser. It's great!
