8 of the Cutest “First Words” Babies Have Spoken

My baby’s first word was her brother’s name. Well, a baby-ese version of his name since his name is loaded with r- and ch-sounds that are too hard for babies to say. But I take it as a testament to her life and her priorities that her first word was her older brother’s name. She loves him more than just about anything so it makes sense. She also hears his name a lot as I repeat it a million times a day to try and get him to pay attention when I’m talking, but that’s another issue altogether.

The other words she’s picked up include typical early baby talk like ball and bye and doggie. She has about half a dozen words now and hearing her say them is just so cute! (Mama is not one of her words. I’m guessing she’ll learn that one sometime after she picks up, “Hey you,” and, “Chopped Liver.” Not that I’m bitter or anything.)

I asked around for other cute first words and my readers on Facebook and Twitter shared some adorable stories. Click through to read them all!

"A's first word was also "book," but he pronounced it "book-a" for the longest time. He would also wake up in the night and practice his words in his crib before he would unleash them on us. We could hear him over the monitor and we would spend so much time just listening to him." - Jennifer

"My MIL has a cute one about my DH. When he was about a year old, they moved from Ohio to Virginia. My FIL owned a large cookie monster-shaped cookie jar that was a gift from a coworker. When my MIL happened to unpack that box, my husband was sitting in the highchair in the kitchen and watched her start to put it on top of the fridge. He sat up, pointed straight at it and yelled, 'COOKIE!!!' He then didn't say anything else for another few months." - Delora

"My second child's first word was, 'Momma,' which she then refused to use again for months, at least as far as I was concerned. She called her teachers, strange women in the grocery store, and even the dog 'Momma.' I would just get an evil grin and  'Daddy." -Synnøve
