We are getting ready to move to a new house and new neighborhood this weekend, and once we do I’ll have to revamp my grocery shopping strategy. You parents know what I mean – which stores you go to for produce, which ones have the best deals, and which are the most family-friendly. Time and money are not to be wasted, and I like to have a plan when I shop!
Once we get to our new ‘hood, I’m planning to try something a little different. It will help us save time we would have spent grocery shopping, and even better, it will help ensure our family always has fresh fruits and vegetables on hand. What’s our plan?
We’re joining a CSA! Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a food trend that started small and is now widely available in most cities. How does it work? We’ll sign up for a weekly produce bin, and each week we’ll have organic fruits and veggies delivered from local farms. Here are just a few of the many benefits of joining a CSA…
1. Less time shopping. No more scoping the produce end caps for sales and dragging my son in and out of the car seat to help replentish our sad, empty fridge. Now the groceries will literally appear on my doorstep.
2. Supporting local farms. The whole idea behind CSA is that your food is coming from a local source. I love supporting our local agriculture and farmers, and it makes me feel good to think my dollar is going somewhere that is important to our family.
3. More organic options. Every CSA is different, but I plan to sign up with one that has a wide variety of organic options. Often the CSA prices tend to be lower than the grocery store for organics – even better!
4. Seasonal eating. Because we’ll be eating from local farms, we’ll also be eating what is growing seasonally. No more grapes in February or cherries in April. In my opinion, food just tastes so much better when it’s eaten in its natural season.
