Fees/Membership Requirements: $75/year. You must be a woman living in San Francisco who is expecting a child or has at least one child five years old or younger.
About the network: GGMG began in April 1996, when 12 San Francisco moms met to address something that all mothers can relate to: the fact that “being a new mom is all-at-once amazing, confusing, rewarding, and lonely,” says Sumi Das, a GGMG member in charge of PR. Two months later, another meeting was held – this time with 50 moms. In the days before smartphones, Facebook, and Twitter, these mothers passed the news about their group through word of mouth. GGMG is run entirely by volunteers; as Das says, “Their dedication is the sole reason the organization has been so successful.”
Why we love it: We were impressed right off the bat with GGMG’s longevity. It’s obvious that they’re doing something right to have lasted so long and adapted well to the changing technology and needs of mothers over the last 15 years. GGMG members have continued to share with each other, from parenting tips to chances to help out in the community, as they have grown from that small local group of moms to a larger online presence.
