About the network: Green Lake Moms is a private group and has grown organically. New members are typically referred by friends. Regarding why she started the network, Melissa Benaroya says: “As a new mom and a professional social worker, I knew that community and connection was key to easing the transition into parenthood. It can be a very isolating experience, and I needed and wanted to create a community for myself and others to help ease the transition.”

Why we love it: Green Lake Moms landed on our radar for being the most recommended listserv from last year’s nominations. We knew we needed to check it out and what we found is best summed up by founder Benaroya herself: “The culture of our group is one of acceptance of all types of parents and parenting. Since everyone feels respected, there is an innate trust in the other parents in our group.” The network has different features in addition to the listserv, including “Shameless Self-Promotion Day,” where moms can promote their local businesses, weekly virtual garage sales, and a local daily deals site run by members.
