Raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder can be immensely rewarding. It can also, at times, feel lonely. You might find yourself wondering, Is anyone else going through the same things I'm going through? And if so, how do they cope? Parsing - or even keeping up with - the latest research into symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, and possible causes can be difficult, and you may be itching to vent your feelings about the way the spectrum disorders are represented in the media. Where can you go to find support, community, and clear, accurate information?

Increasingly, parents are turning to Facebook fan pages. We at Babble have rounded up 30 of the best pages for families with children on the spectrum. We hope you'll find lots here to help you navigate the challenges and joys of raising a child with an ASD.

If by some chance your favorite page isn't included here, please let us and your fellow Babble readers know by nominating it yourself. - Amy Reiter

Autism Speaks is TERRIBLE!! All their money goes into a non-existent cure, while autistic people are not getting the help they need to cope with today’s issues. They have NO accountability, NO sense of who they are representing, and they paint autistics as drains on society with no future. I am an Aspie, and Autism Speaks doesn’t speak for me!

  2. Aspiecow says:

I am on the spectrum. I’ll speak for myself, thanks. Want to do us Aspies a favour, Austism Speaks? Then SHUT UP!!

  3. Anonymous says:

I will not even look at this list because of the #1 spot. They suck!

  4. Sonja says:

Autism Speaks uses a great portion of their money for “publicity” about the organization. The money they raise with their various “walks” around the country goes right back to their main office (such a nice penthouse in NY City). Not one dime left in the city where the walk is held. There is no person with autism on their board so no one with autism really “speaks” for them….

  5. Anonymous says:

I am appalled! You can speak for yourselves. I do nothing without consultation with my own. They speak and they say you don’t understand. So please, don’t speak on behalf of me and mine because you haven’t a clue. Your organisation is offensive to me and mine. Please do not assume you have our voice.

  6. Carolyn Frances Canavan says:

Sorry I have a name, I am not anonymous.

  7. AutismSpeaks4NoOne says:

I am pretty sure is affiliated with Autism Speaks on some level or else they paid to be #1 on this list. That or has completely lost their marbles.

Ummm, it doesn’t matter if you’re one of those families who dislikes Autism Speaks or not; it’s really dumb to assume they are associate with Babble or that they “paid” to be at the top. They’re the number one resource for families in America and they fund thousands of supports and millions of dollars worth of research. I know it must be SO OFFENSIVE for them to suggest finding a “cure” for your child. They’re just so evil to assume you wouldn’t have rather your child been born without autism.

I really have to ask why you all feel this way… I have never felt that A.S. made Autistic people out to be drains on our society, and I have learned so much from them. I would like proof of the terrible things you all are claiming to be true, because I certainly don’t want to support an organization like the one you described. The money earned goes toward research, etc., so they claim. Though I do wish they would fund more things like ABA therapies or special schools, because the resources are limited where I’m at.

I agree that A.S. doesn’t “speak” for my son, however, I think they do a pretty damn good job of raising awareness so more people can at least understand more about my son’s condition. Their name is Autism Speaks. AUTISM speaks. Not, We Speak For Autistic People Because THey Can’t Speak For Themselves. They are just raising awareness, and most of the things they post on their Facebook page are from people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

and no, all their money does not go for a “cure”. They fund tons of research to HELP families with co-morbid medical issues and acessing early intervention programs.

  13. Francisco Becerra says:

This reminds of Obama wining the noble peace prize. Age of Autism is 1000 times better site.

It’s based on how many likes the page has.

A of A has 1932 likes. It must be conspiracy.

It’s not conducive to anyone to say that Autism Speaks doesn’t speak for me. Great, that’s your right to have that option – don’t support them. However, the page it self gives access to many news stories and research done throughout the country. AS is not asking for petitions it is providing information for individuals to use or not use as you have that choice.

Autism Speaks’ primary mission is to fund research and they do that very well. They also focus on lobbying Government for more research dollars and an act they were behind resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in autism research. There were maybe 5 studies on autism going on in any year when Autism Speaks’ predecessor organizations started and now there are hundreds. There are now over 23 states with insurance laws covering autism when there were none. Due in no small part to Autism Speaks.

Again from the title – Top 30 Autism Facebook Fan Pages = not web pages.

  16. Laura Eleanor ButLer says:

While Autism Speaks could do a LOT better, they are certainly a better resource then A of A, which still claims that there might be a link between childhood vaccinations and autism. That study was recently proven fraudulent, and I believe Autism Speaks is aware of this fact, and that the cause of autism is still unknown.

However, they do hope to eventually find a cure for autism, despite the fact that autism is not a “tragic disease”, affects adults as well as children (there are nowhere near enough resources for adults with autism), and blatantly ignores those self-advocates who do not want to be cured.

ICAA is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit all for advocacy and practical, direct supports. The most effective for what several families are looking for.

  18. Nerice says:

That?s rlealy shrewd! Good to see the logic set out so well.

  19. lies of autism speaks says:

Why doesn’t Autism speaks focus 95 percent of revenue to causes of autism and the 4 percent to effects of autism 1 percent admin, instead of the other way around.

  20. Jenn says:

I am a single mother of an autistic child. Though I love my child I find my life to be isolated and lonely due to his behaviors. I am a prisoner and at mercy to him. I am so deflated and to the point where I cry and no longer feel any joy in life
