This weekend we took Cullen on his very first hiking adventure! It was just a short day-trip, a few miles away from our house. But it was still unlike anything he’s done before, and I’m happy to say it was a big success.
I’ve tried doing the back carry on the Ergo carrier a few times recently, and Cullen has hated it. He squirmed and thrashed and made it very clear that he wanted nothing to do with being smashed against my back. I can’t really blame him.
So when we decided to go for a hike on Sunday, I took a friend up on her offer to borrow her extra hiking backpack. For those who are interested, it’s a Kokopax, and we really liked it. It was the perfect size for Cullen, and really comfortable to carry.
We made sure Cullen had a good nap in the morning, and then headed out once he was up for the afternoon. The hiking backpack was much better received than the Ergo back carry, and after a few minutes of whining he got the hang of it. He was able to sit back in his little seat with enough room between him and Casey that he could still use his arms, play with a toy, or snuggle a blanket.
We hiked a total of 4-5 miles down to the waterfront and back. I carried an extra backpack with things like diapers, wipes, plastic keys, puffs, and a camera to capture it all. We ended up going down a few trails marked “difficult” and I was glad my husband was wearing the backpack instead of me. It’s hard to balance with that much weight on your back!
As we headed back toward our car, about two hours later, my husband motioned for me to look behind him. He’d felt a large thud on his back, which could only mean one thing…
Cullen snoozed through the rest of our hike, and then took a real nap in his crib as soon as we got home. It was a big success, and I’m already looking forward to doing it again soon. Looks like we might need to invest in a hiking backpack of our very own!
