Back To School Shopping: My Ultimate Fall Mom Uniform

I don’t know how it is where you live but already the air in Manhattan is feeling different. The nights are cooler, the mornings are crisper, and afternoon breezes tame the end-of-summer sun baking overhead. I’m gonna go ahead and call it: It’s time for some back to school fall shopping!

Before the summer started I wrote about my Ultimate Summer Mom Uniform. And since I’ve been obsessively cultivating my Autumn mom wardrobe–my Fall Momiform, if you will–and since I think I’ve just about got it figured out, I decided to share again, you know, for whatever it’s worth.

The thing is, and it’s such a cliche, but having kids is such a game changer. Especially if your kid is a baby. I’m still nursing, so whatever ‘back to school’ clothes I buy this season have to be boob friendly. Not to mention we walk a ton, so ‘back to school’ shoes have to be practical. And then there’s the matter of laundry friendliness. Now that I have a baby on solids, food gets EVERYWHERE. Obviously, too much preciousness is out the window.

So, after the jump, my ‘Back To School Momiform’ inspirations, and as the grand finale, What I’ll Be Wearing This Season! Since, whatever, why not?!

I love this image for the slouchy comfort of the boyfriend jeans, the chic twist on the old sweatshirt, and the giant bag. I think I'd like mine in leather.

I am obsessed with finding the right flannel shirt to go with my old trusty wide-legged jeans for chilly afternoons at the playground when it's not quite cold enough to want a jacket, but brisk enough that I need some coverage.

Chambray shirts are like the workhorse of all shirts. They stand up to dirt and smudges of baby food better than anything else. I've had this image saved on my desktop for months now.

You know how it is, the first thing we do when we get home is put on something stretchy and comfortable, but there's no reason it has to be ratty and baggy, right?

    OUT TO DINNER
This is one of my favorite outfit inspirations, taken on the street last year during New York Fashion Week by a street fashion photographer. It's not terribly realistic to my life, even for date nights. So, I adjusted it just a twinge...

There we go! Some high-waisted skinny jeans instead ought to do it (jeans from Madewell). I incorporated a peachish scarf to keep the color scheme intact, and swapped out those cute sandals for a pair of loafers from Anthropologie (priced at well under $100, did you think that could happen at Anthro?) Add some punchy lipstick and a menswearish watch (I will always have a crush on that Michael Kors watch, whether or not I can actually afford it) and I'm ready for a night out.

The chambray here is from Madewell. Mine is a Walmart score from the Miley Cyrus line a couple years ago (I paid a little under two bucks for it). I'm excited to wear mine with a pair of hot pink skinny jeans I found at Zara, a smattering of bracelets, and desert wedges, the most versatile shoe of the season. At this stage in the game, a wedge is the only heel I really wear, if I wear them at all.

This flannel is a $25 score from Old Navy. Not bad, right? My wide-legged jeans are an old Forever 21 number, but these days you can find them anywhere. (Cardigan from Madewell, shoes Old Navy.)

At this point I should probably own ten pairs of black leggings, because sadly I've worn my one pair into the ground ($5 at Walmart). Throw on some Minnetonka moccasins, a striped top, and a swipe of liquid eyeliner and you're not slumming it, you're a French goddess. (I find most of my striped tops these days at Forever 21, H&M, and Jcrew).

Sweatshirts with a side of chic are all over the place this season. I've seen them at Madewell, Forever 21, Target, you name it. I went pretty literal with this one, except I swapped the gladiators for a more sensible closed-toe loafer (the same Anthropologie loafers from before), and I swapped the bag for a cute little leather lover, from Zara.

What are you wearing this fall? What’s on your ‘back to school’ shopping list?
