I always knew that Harlan was going to be a great big sister, but I never imagined just how wonderful. She has been the absolute best big sister and best helper I could have ever asked for.
As Avery starts to get older and wants to be entertained more often, I am always doing something to try to keep her happy. It’s proving to be a tough task for me to be on my game as much as she requires. I currently work from home full time and take care of both girls as well. This leaves me for very little time to have for myself. Even to eat lunch!
It’s moments when I can’t do everything all at once that my beautiful little 2 year old steps in. I’ve never asked her to do anything for me in regards to Avery. It’s my job, not hers. But what I’ve come to find out is that her love for her little sister is so strong, that she is willing to stop playing to make sure that her sister is happy.
The other day I was trying to put the laundry away. I had Avery in her entertainment jumper and Harlan watching TV. Avery started to fuss a little bit so I made my way into the room to get her. When I walked in I found Avery quiet and alert with all of her attention focused on her big sister who had sat down to “read” a book to her.
I stepped back and watched as Harlan told her the story of Beauty and the Beast while Avery smiled and talked back to her. It was quite possibly the most heart-warming moment I’ve seen in a long time.
That wasn’t the only time that Harlan has stepped in to console her crying sister. She is always on alert to make sure that Avery is as happy as she can possibly be. There are even times when I can’t seem to make Avery happy, but as soon as Harlan steps in, she is all smiles.
Who knew that a little 2 year old could come to the rescue in moments that her mommy needs it the most?
I do now.
