There was a reason I decided to put Baby Girl in her own room at two-and-a-half months old—which is still pretty little, if you ask even me.
But not as little as my first baby was when I put him in his own room. He slept “through the night” (11 p.m. – 5:30 a.m.) when he was just six weeks old. I transferred him to a crib, and he immediately began sleeping longer, the six-hour night sleep stretching to eight hours pretty quickly.
So when Baby Girl had her best night yet, I figured maybe it was time to do the same. I was hesitant for a number of reasons, but decided she was exhibiting the signs of being ready, not to mention at 13 pounds and 23 inches she had nearly outgrown her bassinet.
And guess what happened when I made the switch:
Baby Girl jumped from seven hours of consecutive sleep to eight and even nine hours in a matter of days, the record high is pictured above. It happened the same way it did with her brother three years ago. So, here I am, with a baby just eleven weeks old who is sleeping nine hours at night. (At least that’s the way it’s been the last couple nights. But of course anything can change.)
I don’t take too much pleasure in boasting about this: I realize there are a lot of mommies out there with eight-month-olds who have yet to sleep through the night. And there’s always the trade-off: Baby Girl is sleeping great at night, but that means she’s a lot more alert/needy throughout the day. For example, I haven’t gotten a good nap out of her yet today, which makes it difficult to spend QT with her older brother. And he’s not happy about it, and letting me know.
That said, I do see it as a big, fat milestone and I’m planning a sort of celebration tonight. But what I should do is just get to bed when she does. I’d love nine hours of sleep!
