5 Favorite Songs for New Parents (Vol 1)

Baby Love: Songs for New Parents

It started when I got pregnant. Some cheesy song fit for an elevator ride or a wait in a dentist’s office suddenly became a ballad of motherly love. Think “Danny’s Song,” for example: “People smile and tell me I’m lucky one, and we’ve just begun, think I’m gonna have a son.”

Next thing I know, I’m crying.

So, you could say music changed for me once I knew we would be having a baby, and it continues to. Yesterday, while doing some shopping, Lauryn Hill’s “To Zion” came on. I was in a cool boutique surrounded by cool 20-somethings that made me feel decidedly un-cool. But we all started bouncing our heads when we heard the first beat of drums. And there I was, pushing my two-month-old’s stroller, knowing I was the only one in the room who really knew what our girl Lauryn was waxing poetic about. (Go me!)

The lyrics became something I wanted an Etsy seller to slap on an artsy poster to frame in my nursery: “How beautiful if nothing more, than to wait at Zion’s door, I’ve never been in love like this before. Now let me pray to keep you from the peril’s that will surely come, see life for you my prince has just begun.”

My list of songs and love songs that apply to the love I have for my children continues to grow. And though I’m no mix master, I’ve made a few CDs for friends when they became pregnant or had their first baby that I think turned out alright, and were warmly received.

Here are five of my favorite tunes to kick off your weekend. You’ll be feeling warm and fuzzy in no time:

1. Eels: Fresh Feeling / Listen here:
Fresh Feeling by Eels on Grooveshark

“You don’t have a clue what it is like to be next to you. I’m here to tell you that it is good, that it is true … Words can’t be that strong, my heart is reeling. This is that fresh, that fresh feeling.”

2. Devendra Banhart: Baby / Listen here:
Baby by Devendra Banhart on Grooveshark

“You’re giving 80 billion years of giggling, a whole new world to live in. But this one’s real, this one’s real, this one’s real … Because you showed me a sunset overflowing, but who cares where it’s going, as long as you’re next to me.”

3. Cat Power: Sea of Love / Listen here:
Sea of Love by Cat Power on Grooveshark

“Do you remember when we met? That’s the day I knew you were my pet. I wanna tell you how much I love you. Come with me, my love, to the sea, the sea of love….”

4. I Will: The Beatles / Listen here:
I Will by The Beats on Grooveshark

“Love you forever and forever, love you with all my heart. Love you whenever we’re together, love you when we’re apart. And when at last I find you, your song will fill the air. Sing it loud so I can hear you, make it easy to be near you. All the things you do endear you to me. Oh, you know I will.”

5. Never Had Nobody Like You: M. Ward / Listen here:
Never Had Nobody Like You by M. Ward on Grooveshark

“And times before that, well I was crazy. I saw the dark side of the moon. And the stars in the sky, they never caught my eye. Honey, I ain’t never had nobody like you.”
