Forever 21 Discontinues Maternity Line

In the spring of 2010, Forever 21 launched a maternity line as part of their more mature department, love 21. I was so excited. I wasn’t yet pregnant, but I was hoping to be very soon. Unfortunately, excitement wasn’t the broad reaction. People were outraged for a ridiculous reason.

Many people seemed to think that Forever 21, a retailer that definitely caters to a young crowd, was creating  a line geared at teens. People suggested that if Forever 21 made maternity clothes cute and hip enough that teens would be more likely to be pregnant. This argument is probably the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Ever. Teens get pregnant for all sorts of reasons, but cheap maternity jeggings has never been one of them.

My fashion blog readers (who generally range from 25-35) were so excited. Just go and read all the comments here. To finally have an option for a stylish and budget friendly maternity line was more than we could have hoped for. Unfortunately, the option didn’t last.

It just came to my attention that Forever 21 has quietly discontinued the line after just under two years of it being in production (and after the last year of nothing but belly panels and maternity lounge pants being released).

I, for one, am incredibly disappointed in the whole affair. I am disappointed with people’s reactions to the line. I am disappointed in Forever 21 for caving into such a silly argument. But mostly, I am disappointed that the next time I am pregnant I won’t be able to find a pair of maternity jeggings for $10.

What do you think? Do you agree or do you think it was out of line for releasing maternity clothes to begin with?
