Holiday Gift Ideas for Every Age and Stage of Your Baby

Holidays shopping for babies can be complicated. Toys have specific age limits, but often even if a baby fits within those age limits, the toy just isn’t ideal for them. I can’t tell you how many toys we got within the right age limit that Eli didn’t care about for months and months. And vice versa, he was immediately obsessed with a few toys we bought the moment he was within the age range or a few weeks shy of it.

And since the holidays are upon us and I have a teeny tiny toy tester at my disposal, I have a good idea of some toys that would make perfect gifts for babies under age 1. Certainly your mileage may vary with each different baby and toy, but these suggestions are based on our experience and the experience of our friends as well. I separated all suggestions by age and tried to keep them all relatively inexpensive. Babies love the cheap toys every bit as much, if not more, than the expensive stuff!

Disclaimer: I’m not associated with any of these products or companies. We use all these toys, but have either paid for them ourselves or had them purchased by friends. And I make no money off of the links below, so click away!

  • Newborn 1 of 17
    Newborn
The newborn in your life doesn't need much besides food, so for this crowd I'd probably stick to clothes. Since it's winter, pajamas with feet, cozy winter outfits with matching adorable hats and baby socks are a must. Another good idea is picking up any remaining items on the baby registry, even if they're more for mom than for baby. The baby won't mind, I promise.

  • 1 Month Old: Black and white toys 2 of 17
1 Month Old: Black and white toys
1 month olds still don't see a whole lot, but they will start to notice black and white items. Getting a few rattles that are black and white (cows! pandas!) would be ideal!

  • 1 Month Old: Floor Gym 3 of 17
    1 Month Old: Floor Gym
1 month is still a little on the early side, but this is a toy that will be used for months to come and can be used from birth on. These don't need to be fancy or terribly expensive (we have this one, and love it). If a baby can lay under it and look at toys, then it'll be a winner.

  • 2 Months Old: A Mobile or Hanging Toys 4 of 17
2 Months Old: A Mobile or Hanging Toys
2 months is a big awareness awakening for baby, so now is a good time to look into those stroller toys or if baby doesn't have a mobile yet, now is a great time to get one. My son is 7 months old and still LOVES his stroller toy and mobile.

  • 2 Months Old: A Lovie! 5 of 17
    2 Months Old: A Lovie!
Babies tend to start to bond with objects around 6 weeks, so 2 months is a perfect time to introduce a lovie, or a security blanket. Eli has this monkey (2 of them actually, in case one gets dirty) and absolutely loves him. For nighttime he has a breathable security blanket from Aden and Anais since he won't sleep without a small blanket, but likes to keep it over his face.

  • 3 Months Old: O Balls! 6 of 17
    3 Months Old: O Balls!
My son has loved this toy for as long as he has had it. It's a ball with large holes that make it easy for baby to grab and hold on to. He has a regular one and a football, and honestly, he prefers the football because he can chew on the ends of that, where it's difficult to chew on the round ball. These are important matters when you're a baby.

  • 3 Months Old: Sophie! 7 of 17
    3 Months Old: Sophie!
3 months is really just the very start of Sophie's wonders. Some babies can put the toy in their own mouth, others, like my son, loved it when we held it and he could chew. Now at 7 months, he is a Sophie pro and could hardly live without her!

  • 4 Months Old: Chew Toys! 8 of 17
    4 Months Old: Chew Toys!
4 months is when a lot of babies begin the teething journey and it's a great time for chewable toys. Eli has the little round ring that is easy to hold onto and fun to chew on and he is a HUGE fan.

  • 4 Months Old: Board Books! 9 of 17
    4 Months Old: Board Books!
This is a great age to start reading books to baby, because they can sit on a parent's lap easily and can pay attention to short stories. My personal favorites are Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Moo, Baa, La La La!

  • 5 Months Old: Crinkle Toys! 10 of 17
    5 Months Old: Crinkle Toys!
My baby is obsessed with crinkle toys. They make a sound like plastic bags, but are obviously a lot safer. We have this little duck and my son will play with him for 10 minutes at a time, easily.

  • 5 Months Old: Taggies Toys! 11 of 17
    5 Months Old: Taggies Toys!
When Eli was about 5 months old, he would spin himself around on his floor mat to play with the tag. There are seriously 6 hanging toys and a mirror and all he wanted was the tag. Not much has changed, except now we have several taggies toys and he loves all of them.

  • 6 Months Old: Highchair Toy! 12 of 17
    6 Months Old: Highchair Toy!
Since baby is likely going to be eating this month, a high chair toy is a pretty good idea. We love this one because it spins and turns and makes just enough noise to keep Eli entertained without making it impossible for us to have conversation. (We don't leave it up while he's eating, it's more for when he's finished and we're eating, to keep him entertained.)

  • 6 Months Old: Toy Remote! 13 of 17
    6 Months Old: Toy Remote!
My son is obsessed with phones and remotes, so we bought him this toy remote (and we pretended like we didn't want him to play with it, like the real remote) and now he is in love with it. He will literally sit and play with it for 15 minutes before even considering another toy in the vicinity.

  • 7 Months Old: LeapFrog Animal Adventure Learning Table! 14 of 17
7 Months Old: LeapFrog Animal Adventure Learning Table!
Eli got this as a gift for Chanukah and already loves it. It's great because for now we have it on the floor, but when he's standing, it has legs and transforms into a play table. For the technology involved, it's pretty reasonably priced, too!

  • 7 Months Old: Bath Toys! 15 of 17
    7 Months Old: Bath Toys!
You could probably buy bath toys sooner, but Eli is just now really interacting with bath toys. He has a rubber ducky that he just loves and these Winnie the Pooh bath ball tumblers that he can't yet work himself, but loves to watch them crash into the honey pot and to try to stick the balls into his mouth!

  • 8-10 Months Old: Ride on Toy! 16 of 17
8-10 Months Old: Ride on Toy!
Eli hasn't reached this age range, so we can't give the best advice, but we received this great ride on toy for when Eli is a little older. It's even better because it transforms from a rocker to a parent-pushed ride-on and then to a self-propelled ride-on toy, so though the cost is considerably higher for this toy than all the others, its lifespan is longer than most toys!

  • 10-12 Months Old: Push Toy! 17 of 17
    10-12 Months Old: Push Toy!
Based upon my experience working with babies (since my son is only 7 months old), push toys are great for this age range, as they learn to walk and then to explore pretend play. You want one that's heavy enough that it won't fly away when pushed, but one reasonably light enough that a baby can push it. This one is my favorite, but there are plenty of other good ones.
