I have a confession to make. I am kind of lazy. No, really, I am. I am a great lover of taking the easy way out when it comes to the day to day tasks of running a household full of kids. If, for example, my 6th grader wants to sleep in his school clothes so he doesn’t have to get dressed the next morning, I say go for it. If the dog can get to all those Fruit Loops spilled on the kitchen floor before I can find time to vaccuum (yes, we eat Fruit Loops, and not the fake, organic kind they have at the Food Co-op either), I actually barricade him in there until he does his job. Yep, I am all about the easy parenting wins.
When it comes to bathing Baby G, I take the “kill two birds with one stone” approach. She is now 9 months old, and I don’t think I’ve ever given her a bath without also being in the bathtub myself (that photo you see above is of her dad bathing her. He’s way less lazy than I am). You see, I love baths, and I will climb in a hot tub of water any time with minimal encouragement. So whenever G needs to be dunked in the water because she’s starting to smell ripe, or because the dog decided to ignore the cereal on the floor and instead lick leftover babyfood from G’s arms and hands, I take it as a message from the universe that I, too, am supposed to take a bath.
So just as with her 4 older siblings, Baby G’s baths are always a two-fer – mama and baby together. Now that she can sit up on her own (although she’s still behind on this in that she can only do it if I get her into the sitting position myself), I’ve been thinking about letting her bathe solo, with me sitting tub-side. But so far, I haven’t done it yet. Bathing WITH the baby is just so much easier, and more relaxing to boot.
So how about y’all? How do you bathe your baby? Do you bathe with him or her or no? Do you use special baby bathtubs and tubseats or do you do what my grandmother used to do and fold a thick towel in the bottom of the tub full of water? And if you have a male partner, does he ever bathe with the baby or not? Talk about baby baths in the comments below.
