Lisa Ling Gets a First-Hand View of the L.A. Foster Care System

It’s quite rare that a journalist gets access to the foster care system in the U.S. This is largely due to the fact that the last thing a system, which inherently functions in the nexus of family crisis, needs is too worry about confidentiality and exploitation of the people it serves. Yet the privacy and seeming secrecy of foster care and the lives of the families caught in the system leads to further marginalization and misunderstanding. That’s why I’m very excited about the upcoming episode of “Our America with Lisa Ling,” an acclaimed docu-series that airs on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). The television documentary focuses on Los Angeles County, home to the largest child welfare system in the country, and Lisa Ling obtained unprecedented access.

Watch the episode on the Oprah Winfrey Network on July 3rd at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
