Soon after the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption (DTFA) posted this photo of Gina on its Facebook page, their website crashed from such an enormous uptick in traffic. The Facebook post has been “liked” more than 900,000 times and shared more than 30,000 times.
Gina is absolutely adorable and the poster message is powerful. Summing up her life of 751 days without a permanent home cuts straight to the heart of foster care adoption. I wonder how many adoptive parents-to-be have been created!
Personally, I’m inspired by the poignant message of the number of days Gina spent in foster care. In fact, I think there’s potential for a new hashtag to go viral that will allow other foster kids, foster parents, case workers and anyone else involved in a foster child’s life to share their number of days in foster. For example, my foster daughter Sandy is
463 #daysinfostercare in NYC and counting.
Too many days, right? Get your number out there as often and make a statement. You can use this link to count up your days in foster care. To help spread the word on your number of days in foster care, include your state or city and mention local and state politicians and organizations like @AdoptUsKids, @ChildWelfareHub, @AECFNews and @DaveThomasFoundation.
Include me, @fosterhood, and I’ll make sure to retweet! Recommend any other Twitter mentions to add? Please share in the comments section below!
