My Everyday "Mom" Uniform

emily emily |

There was a time in my life when I got “fancy” and dressed up for my corporate America job every single morning. As an interior designer, I worked at a firm where I was allowed to be funky, fun, and take modest liberties with my style. Honestly, I loved getting dressed in the morning.

I now work from home as both a work from home mom and a full time stay at home mom. My days are filled with being the best mom I can muster up to be, and then at night after the kids have been tucked in I catch up on my design work and freelance writing from my home office. I love my work/home life balance, and wouldn’t have it any other way. But oh, do I miss my “fancy” clothes some days…

Over the past couple years, I’ve found myself wearing a variation of the same outfit every single day. I guess you could call it my “mom” uniform.

The 8 articles that make up my “mom” uniform:

  • Cheap Sunglasses

    Cheap Sunglasses

I always got through a few pairs of sunglasses a year, so I typically opt for inexpensive ones that I don't feel bad about if they're lost or damaged.
    Buy them from Target

  • Comfy Zip-Up Hoodie

Hoodies are a breastfeeding mothers dream. I don't even want to admit how many I have in my wardrobe.
I love this one from Element

  • Suede Moccasins

They feel like slippers, but you can leave the house in them too. It's a win-win!
I have this pair from Minnetonka

  • Nursing Bra

    Nursing Bra

I've breastfed 4 babies, and one thing that I've learned is that a high quality supportive nursing bra is essential.

  • Relaxed Fit Skinny Jeans

The first 3 months postpartum were spent in yoga pants. For the Spring I bought a comfy pair of skinny jeans. Yes, I said comfy.

  • Diaper Bag

    Diaper Bag

These days, my diaper bag is just as much a part of my wardrobe as the shoes on my feet. I love this bag because it's super stylish, amazingly durable, and extremely functional.

  • Nursing Tank

    Nursing Tank

I've very particular to this nursing top from Peek-a-boo. I have it in gray, and it goes with everything (especially my hoodie collection). It's nice and long, which makes it an ideal layering piece.

  • Water Bottle

    Water Bottle

No questions asked, I simply do not leave home without this water bottle from Contigo. It seriously follows me everywhere I go.

Honestly, I’m not so much on the cutting edge of fashion anymore, but in my opinion, what I wear is still pretty cute and always very functional. And until my days aren’t filled with changing diapers and nursing babies, function is going to trump my fashion.

What does your mom wardrobe look like? Is it similar to mine?

Bravado nursing bras are the best! I was kinda upset when I didn’t discover them earlier than my 4th child. Having …um…extra boosum means that it can be really difficult to find a great supportive nursing bra where nothing spills over the edge or you look like you are sporting a uniboob. Bravado bras came to the rescue for me!

I just wear a regular Calvin Klein bra and pop a boob out when I need to. What is everyone’s thoughts- Is a nursing bra really better than this and how-so? Is it all just a marketing scheme to get me to buy more crap?
