8 Ways That Taking Care of a Newborn Is Like The Movie "Groundhog Day"

By Lauren Hartmann |

"Groundhog Day" and taking care of my newborn...eerily similar.

Today is February 2nd, Groundhog Day. It’s the day when the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, comes out of his cozy hole to predict whether or not we’ll have an early spring based on if he sees his shadow or not. This particular day is the basis for the 90′s Bill Murray movie,”Groundhog Day.”

This movie is one of my all-time favorites, but if you haven’t seen it, here’s the plot in a nutshell:  Bill Murray is stuck reliving the same day (Groundhog Day) over and over again.  There’s more to it than that, but that’s the main idea.

Well, as I thought about it, I realized that the life of a parent isn’t all that different from Murray’s Groundhog Day experience.  With all the menial tasks that abound, it can sometimes feel like you’re reliving the same day over and over again.

So, in honor of Groundhog Day I’ve made a list of “8 Ways That Taking Care of a Newborn Is Like The Movie Groundhog Day”.

Check out my list after the jump!

Parenting Routines I Do Over and Over Again

Feeding Time

Nothing else gives you that "deja vu" feeling à la "Groundhog Day" quite like feeding a newborn (especially if you're a breastfeeding mama trying to increase your milk supply like me!). My feeding cycle currently involves supplementing with a syringe feeding, then nursing, then pumping. When I'm all done? Well, then I usually get about an hour before I have to do it all again.

This is so funny – I was just thinking how being on maternity leave with my now 8-week old is like living Groundhog Day over and over : )

Sounds about like my life as well.

I love the matching shirts in the cuddle time photo!
