Newsflash: Hugging Your Baby Won't Make His Cough Go AwayNaomi Odes
Here’s the latest: Shnook has a mild Pneumonia (or had it, and has been treated with antibiotics for the last 3 or 4 days). Now Fuzz has started to cough the same ugly cough. He’s been waking up even more frequently. We took him to the doctor, who said his lungs were clear, so the only things we can do for him are:
1. Irrigate his nose and suck the snots out (check)
2. Run the humidifier (check)
3. Have him sleep upright. (check…Wait, what?)
Yes, poor little dude has had to sleep upright in the carseat for the last three nights in a row. Actually, I’ve been alternating him between the bed for feeding and the carseat when he wakes himself up from coughing. I have been snuggling with him and buckling him in, then rocking the carseat on the floor with my index finger while I try to sleep. I woke up a couple of times and my finger was still extended. Dedication.
For me, one of the most difficult parts of being a parent is how little control I have on things like illness. If he’s hungry or wet or tired, I can help him through, but I can’t reach inside his little body and squish that cough, which I know is bothering him so much. It’s painful for me because I know I created this little person, and without me, he wouldn’t be able to survive. So, I brought him into the world and now the world gave him a yucky virus (or bacteria). Oh, the guilt. Also, as others on BFY have already discussed, I can’t just give him medicine to ease his symptoms, which is killing me.
Every time he coughs my heart shudders. Just holding him and giving him love isn’t enough to make him well. I hope he’s on his way back to health in very short order.
Anyone else’s baby have pneumonia, RSV, Pertussis or another respiratory infection?
