Organic Crib Mattress for the Masses
1. New Munchkin ComfortSafe Organic Crib Mattress arrives in mail.
2. Baby rolls over on to stomach.
3. Baby sleeps through night.
Coincidence?
Ok, so maybe I can’t give the mattress credit for the miracle that is a 12-hour-a-night baby sleep (finger’s x-ed) but it certainly isn’t hurting.
When I was first looking for a crib mattress a few years ago, there were no affordable organic options. Unless you spent hundreds of dollars, you were out of luck. It’s so nice to see this new line of mattresses from Munchkin with mainstream price-points. The organic thing is not a must-have for me, our other two crib mattresses are just the regular ol’ chemical-ly kind, but when I unwrapped this mattress subconsciously expecting that wave of fumes, I noticed its absence. This mattress smelled like… well, like nothing. There was no need to “air-it-out” as you hear so many mothers suggesting. I thought of my lil baby pressing his precious little drooly mouth up against it and I felt good. And like I said, he isn’t complaining, he is too busy sleeping.
The other cool thing about this mattress is that it is dual sided. There is the safety measure of a firm side for baby and a softer side for toddler comfort. Genius! Clare gave the soft side her 3-yr-old thumbs-up. I even tested it out and could tell the difference. Although honestly I have always found a firm bed most comfortable. But little Clare? She enjoys the soft.
There are 4 mattresses in this new collection:
ComfortSafe Cotton – Extra Firm
ComfortSafe Cotton Ultra – Dual Sided
ComfortSafe Organic – Dual Sided

I fully support using organic crib mattresses for little ones. With our babies spending so much time sleeping, it is comforting to know they aren’t breathing in unnecessary fumes. Munchin is a brand I hadn’t heard of until know and will look into it.
Naturepedic offers a nice selection of organic crib mattresses as well.

I think organic cotton mattresses are a step in the right direction but I still have concerns. I did a little history and discovered that all crib mattresses were made of cotton before they invented PVC. PVC covered mattresses solved the problemt all cotton mattresses had because they were waterproof and didn’t allow bacteria, mold and mildew to grow in them and they were easy to clean and sanitize. 50 years later we all know what a horrible choice PVC was and is as a crib mattress covering. But is cotton a good choice? It still has the same problem today as it had 50 years ago, it’s not waterproof or easy to clean and sanitize. So most parents today put a waterproof cover on their cotton mattress to waterproof it. The problem is the the waterproof covers are usually made of PVC, polyurethane or polyester. I think then point I am trying to make is a baby safe sleep environment has to be considered in it’s entirety. A safe sleep environment doesn’t come from a single product but rather all the bedding as a whole. The most logical product I’ve seen is a cover that is a toxic gas barrier. It prevents gasses coming from any crib mattress from getting to my baby and is waterproof so it prevents any mattress from being exposed to the things that can cause bad stuff to grow in the mattress. I found in on Amazon, serendipity crib mattress cover.
The writer is dead unreal! Lots of large info and breath, both of which we all necessary! Also equal to value the second and exertion you put into your diary and careful entropy you tender.
