I’m happy for all the SAG award winners, especially soon-to-be-mom Natalie Portman. But let me be very clear: This is Annette Bening’s year, Oscar. Wait, let me be really specific: This is Annette Bening’s year, Hilary Swank.
I have a soft spot for Annette Bening because she was pregnant and fabulous at the 2000 Oscars, and I was incensed on her behalf perhaps unreasonably because even way back then, when my own cankles and misery were just a twinkle in my eye, I admired her grit and fortitude as she suited up and strutted down the red carpet and endured an endless supply of jokes at her expense.
She lost to Hilary Swank then (American Beauty v. Boys Don’t Cry), and then again in ’04 (Being Julia v. Million Dollar Baby). They were both up for SAG awards last night, and neither won the aforementioned Portman won, and I love her bump, and I support her and hope she does well in life as a mom, a bad-ass Jewess, and a terrific actress.
But this is Annette’s year, dammit. She’s a mom, she’s played a mom, and it’s time. And if I’m not mistaken, Natalie Portman is going to have plenty of statuettes in her future — and babies, too.
Okay, back to me and Abby… I just had to say that out loud!
Who’s with me? Let’s storm the red carpet and demand Annette’s Oscar!
