Before having a baby everyone told me, “Make sure that you sleep when the baby sleeps. You’ll be taking lots of naps.”
Now that I actually have a baby, I have to say that these people were right. I really should be sleeping when my baby sleeps. The only problem with that? I am the world’s worst napper. What usually happens is that I end up laying in bed or on the couch for an hour, willing myself to fall asleep, but never actually falling asleep and then by the time I actually start dozing off, Fern is awake and ready to eat again. Hour wasted.
So, what does a mama do in lieu of napping?
In lieu of napping I…
*Do housework – cleaning toilets, washing dishes, sweeping dust bunnies, doing loads of laundry. I’m pretty sure my house is cleaner now than it was in the pre-baby days. Imagine that!
*Personal Grooming – getting dressed, putting on makeup, making my hair presentable. Most times I look more polished now than I did pre-baby, but I think that’s mostly because it makes me feel more human. Even if I can’t leave my house, I can at least look decent while I’m nursing on the couch.
*Blog – I don’t know how the crafty mommy bloggers do it! It’s all I can manage to do my blog posts here on Babble, let alone my posts over at my own blog. Typing one-handed while nursing and trying to write clever quips when you’re sleep deprived is harder than you might imagine. I can’t even begin to fathom how I would manage if I had to come up with creative DIY projects or cook meals to post recipes. Mommy bloggers must be the ultimate multi-taskers and I’m hoping one day I’ll be able to join their ranks.
*Hang out with the dog – playing fetch and giving pets. My poor dog has definitely been a little neglected since we brought Fern home. We try to spend time with her when we can, but she was used to getting our full attention in the pre-baby days and obviously things have changed a bit since she’s far less needy than a baby. She still appreciates a good round of fetch – even if our games are few and far between these days.
Perhaps one day I’ll learn to nap when my baby does, but for now I’m enjoying cramming in these activities during my free-time instead.
What do you do during your baby’s nap time? Are you a napper or do you keep yourself busy during nap times?
