Today, Starbucks announced they will be adding a new size to their menu- The Trenta. Starbucks trenta? STARBUCKS TRENTA? Trenta means thirty in Italian, but actually the “Trenta” is a whopping 31 ounces. That’s only one ounce shy of the Big Gulp. Don’t ask me how I know that. Being a new mom, caffeine definitely plays an important role in my life. But, this role, my friends, need not be this big. What happened to concept that bigger is no longer better? When McDonald’s un-super-sized itself, didn’t Starbucks take a cue from them?
When I was pregnant with the Shnook, all sorts of new studies came out about caffeine and pregnancy, mostly stating that too much caffeine in the first trimester could cause miscarriage. Many doctors (including mine) say 1-2 cups of coffee a day is ok. But what if the “cup” one decides to use is an iced coffee in the behemeth that is the new Starbucks trenta!?Surely, even though most smart people know that 1-2 cups mean a ‘Tall’ at best, there must be people out there who interpret things their own way, right? What if suddenly pregnant women everywhere start gulping down this new Starbucks size as if it’s normal?
It’s also interesting to recognize just how much caffeine is in these beverages. According to americanpregnancy.org, a Starbucks Grande coffee has between 259-400mg of caffeine. A black tea of the same size is 120 mg, so less than half. I can’t even fathom how much a Starbucks Trenta must have, although the ice in the coffee definitely takes up space.
Then there’s the issue of calories. Starbucks currently says they will only be offering iced coffee and iced tea in this size, but is a Frappuccino coming soon? A Venti Starbucks Frappuccino has 323 calories. By my calculations (I love math, by the way) that would mean a Trenta would have 478 calories. That would definitely exceed the recommended extra calories per day for pregnant women.
What’s your take on the New Starbucks size? Is there a Starbucks Trenta in your future? Would you have one while pregnant?
