The 10 Most Random Places I've Breastfed My Baby Are…

Many new moms taking their first foray into breastfeeding tend to be a bit timid…I was one of them. For the first few months I would only nurse Fern with a full on nursing cover – even at home amongst friends and I would never dream of nursing in public. At church, I would leave and go to the nursing moms room. At restaurants I would leave and go nurse in my car. When people were over I’d often nurse in the other room. I just felt uncomfortable and unsure of myself back then, but what a difference a few months make. Now I’m much more comfortable with nursing and am much les shy about doing so in public. I still cover up with a blanket, but I have no qualms about nursing wherever and whenever. I’m not a militant breastfeeding “lactivist” or anything like that, but I’ve just come to realize that it’s just not that big of a deal. If my baby is hungry, I’m going to feed her. This change got me thinking about all the random places I’ve breastfed since those early days and I thought I’d compile a list and then I’d love to hear what the most random place you’ve ever breastfed was!

  • 1. On the toilet 1 of 10
    1. On the toilet
OK, so this one isn't super weird and most moms have probably nursed here, but it's still a little bit odd when you stop to think about it.
  • 2. In the shower 2 of 10
    2. In the shower
Also not a super strange place, especially considering I used to shower with Fern in lieu of baths, but it definitely brings the idea of "multi-tasking" to a whole new level.
  • 3. Walking through the grocery store 3 of 10
    3. Walking through the grocery store
Pushing a cart with one hand, balancing a baby on my boob with the other...mommy skills.
  • 4. At a fancy restaurant 4 of 10
    4. At a fancy restaurant
If I'm eating dinner, then why shouldn't my baby? Pre fixe meals for all!
  • 5. In the woods 5 of 10
    5. In the woods
We were on a walk with the stroller through the woods when Fern suddenly got hungry. So I pulled up a stump and took a little mid-woods snack break.
  • 6. At the lake 6 of 10
    6. At the lake
Breastfeeding at the lake was a little bit awkward. Not really sure why. Probably because I was wearing a swimsuit and a towel. Yep. That's why.
  • 7. While drinking a glass of wine at home 7 of 10
    7. While drinking a glass of wine at home
OK, so that's not really a place, but it still feels really random to drink while simultaneously nursing your baby. I rarely drink (as in maybe half a glass once a month or so with dinner), but when I do I try to do it while nursing, because my doctor said that the alcohol won't have metabolized yet, so it's safer. I'm probably going to get some flack for drinking wine at all, but that's life.
  • 8. While picking blackberries 8 of 10
    8. While picking blackberries
Blackberry picking is a much trickier endeavor than one might think and it took so long that Fern's lunch time approached and I had to multi-task to finish up the picking. Nursing while blackberry picking was one of my trickier feats.
  • 9. Walking down the street 9 of 10
    9. Walking down the street
I've actually done this on multiple occasions, but it's kind of funny to do in a really young, hip part of town where people don't bring babies often, much less breastfeed in public.
  • 10. While swinging 10 of 10
    10. While swinging
We have a swing in our backyard and sometimes Fern gets hungry. Swinging is hard work. Swinging while breastfeeding? Even harder!
