The most surprising part about being a mom for me has been how much of parenting is made up of simply watching the clock. How long since he’s last eaten? How long since he woke up from his nap? How long has he been sleeping? How long till bedtime? (Please bless I will make it till bedtime!!)
The other day I didn’t have my watch on, and it was then that I realized how much I’ve come to rely on it. We were in Central Park and my husband asked me if I wanted a popsicle from the cart, and as a reflex I checked my watch. Why? Nobody knows. Possibly I was looking to see how long since Huck had last eaten to know whether or not I was hungry? In any case, it wasn’t there and I suddenly felt naked, bereft, lost, and completely adrift! I picked a coconut popsicle and I really didn’t like it that much! Coincidence???
I feel like a good watch is a new mom life-saver. A super hero sidekick! I need a watch that is reliable, easy to read in the middle of the night, and of course, awesome. After the jump, the two watches I’d let be my co-pilots, if I were flying a plane, I guess?
I know, this watch is super nerdy. It’s also super rad! It glows in the dark for midnight feedings, it’s waterproof so you don’t even have to think about it during bath time, you can set alarms for who knows what, it beeps on the hour (nerdy!), and mine has been spit up on so many times it’s practically earned sainthood (just like me). I love this watch. I bought it at the Casio website five years ago and the battery is still going strong (I bought one for my husband at a place which rhymes with “Dalmart” and the battery died after six months, so let it be known). Chances are, you need this watch. Also, maybe I’m a dork but I happen to think it is the height of stylish arm wear.
Sometimes a mama just needs to feel a little luxurious, am I right? For months I’d been craving a Michael Kors gold watch. Here in the city they are ubiquitous. It’s a classic case of “all the cool girls have one,” and so of course I had to have one, because clearly I am COOL. But I could never pull the plug on it because (well, aside from its cost-prohibitiveness being an issue) I hated the idea of wearing the same watch as everyone else. Tricky! So I was really excited to find this watch from Kenneth Cole, because it fits the “menswear as ladieswear” trend perfectly, but is distinctive enough that I can maintain some bizarre idea that I have any personal style integrity (this is important . . . right?). I was sent one to try and I haven’t taken it off. It’s heavy but not too heavy, the face is HUGE so you can easily read the time, it has a date window (the only way I ever know what day it is), and the blue/rose gold combo is swank. My only request? I wish it also told me the day of the week. (And what to make for dinner cause I am stumped.) (Watch is released in September.)
How’s about you guys? What’s been the most surprising part about parenting for you? Is it how big your boobs still are? Seven months in and every day I’m still surprised to see them there. Hi, boobs!
