10 Things I Am Loving About My Almost-One-Year-Old

Things I Am Loving About My Almost One Year Old

All photos by Margaret Jacobsen Photography

I can hardly believe I’m going to have a one-year-old come Tuesday.

This past year with Fern Winter has been a whirlwind and has gone by way too quickly. Every mom says this, but that’s because it’s true.

My first year as a mama has been filled with so many moments of unparalleled joy and a love I never knew possible. No matter how many other children we have in the future, my little Fern Winter will always have a special place in my heart, because she was the one who made me a mother.

I am pausing to soak up every last moment of this time and taking inventory about all the tiny, little things that I love about my baby, who won’t be a baby for so much longer.

The other day we were visiting with a photographer friend, the talented Margaret Jacobsen, and she snapped a few of the most stunning photos of Fern that perfectly capture who she is right now, so I wanted to share them along with a little list of just a few of the many things I am loving about my almost one year old these days.

Her little personality beginning to shine through
This girl is beginning to develop a little personality that is all her own. I'm learning that she's a mover and a shaker and never wants to sit still. I'm learning that she is determined. She is coy. And she is so many more things that I have yet to uncover and I love learning every little thing I can about her as it comes out.

  • Her love for all furry creatures 2 of 10
Her love for all furry creatures
She loves all animals and beards which are also furry. She gets so excited when she sees a dog walking down our street and starts waving her hands and saying "da-ba" - we think that's dog, but we're not really sure. Regardless, it's pretty cute.

  • Her funny open mouthed kisses 3 of 10
    Her funny open mouthed kisses
Fern will not give kisses, but they're definitely the sloppy, wet, open-mouthed variety and seem more like she's trying to eat your face. She gets so excited about it though and it makes me smile when she attacks me with kisses each and every time.

  • Her love for found objects 4 of 10
    Her love for found objects
Fern is always carrying something around with her. In this case it happened to be our photographer friend's camera lens cap and more often it's this funny, purple, plastic phone. You can hear her crawling from a mile away with a clip clop from whatever object she happens to be crawling with at the time.

  • Her surprised face 5 of 10
    Her surprised face
Fern's newest "thing" is open her mouth in a very surprised fashion. The world is all new and surprising and I love seeing it through her eyes and painted across her sweet face.

    Her morning excitement
Nothing is sweeter than when I go in to get Fern from her room after a night of sleep. Her face lights up the whole room with joy and it's all for me.

  • How she uses me as her own personal climbing gym 7 of 10
How she uses me as her own personal climbing gym
Fern loves crawling up me like a baby spider monkey and I think it's the funniest thing!

  • How she says da-da when I ask her to say ma-ma 8 of 10
How she says da-da when I ask her to say ma-ma
Me: "Fern, say 'ma-ma'." Fern: "da-da" Story of my life. But it's still kinda sweet.

  • Watching her learn how to walk 9 of 10
Watching her learn how to walk
In the past week Fern took her first steps and it's been a joy to see her continue to take more slowly but surely testing out the waters.

  • Her curiosity 10 of 10
    Her curiosity
I realize that curiosity is something that a lot of babies personify, but I still love seeing it uniquely expressed through my own child. It's so sweet to see her seeking out new information about her world and to see her learning more and more every day.
