Up, Up, and Away! Avery is Walking!

I know the picture to the left is horrible and blurry, but it captures the exact moment that Avery began walking for the very first time. So although it looks like it’s crazy and out of focus, it’s a picture that means more and says more than I could have ever imagined. With my phone by my side nearly every single second of the day, it helps me capture moments as special as this just as they are happening.

Avery took her first step on Christmas day, but hasn’t done much since then. She would take four to five baby steps and then realize that she can get where she needs to go by crawling. So she would just give up and crawl. She loved to stand, but really didn’t want to do much more than that.

A couple of days ago she began standing from the sitting position. This was huge for her because she always needed something to pull up on in order to stand. It was then that I knew walking wouldn’t be too far off. My oldest daughter, Harlan, began walking at nearly 11 months and that was the first thing that she did right before she started walking for the first time.

Last night after dinner, the girls and I were playing while we waited for my husband to get home from work. Avery was standing not too far away and decided to try to come towards us. But not crawling as she usually does. One foot moved slowly in front of the other and she started taking step after step. Harlan and I looked at each other shocked and with a huge grin so proud of the accomplishment that Avery had just made. Then of course I tried to call every single person in my family to video chat with them so that they could see Avery walk. I texted my husband to hurry home because his daughter was walking. I don’t think I could have been more excited or more proud of her. We squealed, clapped, shouted, and jumped in the air, all in excitement for Avery’s big milestone.

It’s a bittersweet moment when you see your child walk for the first time. As much as I love that she is gaining the independence and growing up, she’s still growing up. And just like that my baby isn’t a baby anymore.

When did your little one start walking?
