What a Difference Two Months Makes

Today marks two months since the day our plane landed in San Francisco, and we were home with Elvie at last. I have so many clear memories of that trip home, but the one that stands out most is walking through the airport in Dubai, with Elvie in my left arm, never having to stop and readjust, even as we walked to several different places to get her transit visa and board the hotel shuttle bus. She was just so light; I remember thinking that it was impossible that she was so tiny that I could walk so far without stopping to shift her weight once. At the time, she weighed just over six pounds. I still can’t wrap my head around that number.

She has grown and healed so much in the relatively short time that we have been home. Today we went to our last follow-up appointment at the hospital; she no longer needs to be monitored for the issues that landed her there soon after we arrived home. She has nearly doubled her weight. It’s amazing, really. To celebrate, I’ve collected a photos from each week since we got home, bookended by a photo taken right after we got off the plane, and one taken today. Be amazed with me. This baby is a little miracle.

She was so tired and so sick, and I saw that, but at the same time, I always saw her as perfect and beautiful. That day was no exception.

In the hospital, with the NG tube already in place. I can't get over how big her pacifier is against her face.
  • The Second Week 3 of 11
    The Second Week
Already getting better, she slept peacefully. Still, look how big her little lamb blanket looks next to her!

    The Third Week
Oh, that smile. This is the beginning of what would become an impressive set of cheeks.
  • The Fourth Week 5 of 11
    The Fourth Week
Between hospital stays, we had a great time at home. Here she is, my baby raccoon, so happy.
  • The Fifth Week 6 of 11
    The Fifth Week
Back in the hospital, but hamming it up just the same.
  • The Sixth Week 7 of 11
    The Sixth Week
Home for good, and happy and snuggly to boot.
  • The Seventh Week 8 of 11
    The Seventh Week
    Crooning. She loves to sing.
  • The Eighth Week 9 of 11
    The Eighth Week
She's finally getting big enough that her lamb doesn't look comically large. She's also grown into several of her headbands, all of which would simply fall off her tiny head before.
  • The Ninth Week 10 of 11
    The Ninth Week
Elvie wakes up happy and ready to chat every morning.
  • Today 11 of 11
    Today
She's happy and healthy, and has nearly doubled her weight. She can sit up on her own and take off her socks. She sings, she chats, she yells. She is excited to be here. We couldn't be happier.
