When Daddy’s Away, The Girls Will Play

My husband left to go out of town on a work trip for a couple of days. I remember the first time that he had to travel shortly after Avery was born. I was scared out of my mind to have to take care of both a newborn and a toddler. I wondered how in the world I was going to survive on the sleep deprived nights and busy days. After a couple of days of getting used to doing things on my own, I realized that I actually enjoyed my time alone with them.

Now, as crazy as it sounds, I look forward to the time that my husband goes out of town. The girls and I miss him dearly when he’s gone, but it’s such a special time for us and I make sure to make the most of it.

Taking care of two little ones by yourself can be tough, especially if you are used to sharing some of the duties with a significant other. But rather than going on with our mundane routine when my husband goes out of town and sulking in the fact that I don’t get to share the duties, I make it extra special for all of us.

I plan activities, special meals, and even special surprises. Tonight I have a pizza party and movie night planned for me and the girls. Avery will get to nibble on pizza for the first time and Harlan and I get to indulge in some of New York City’s finest. Friday night’s usually mean movie night for my my husband and me, but tonight Harlan gets to pick out the flick. All three of us will cuddle up on the couch with blankets and pillows and watch the movie. There will be no bedtimes, just a time that we fall asleep when we get tired.

Tomorrow we will wake up to pancakes and orange juice and some of our favorite cartoons! It’s a bit cold here in NYC, but that won’t keep us from venturing out to some of our  favorite stores and perhaps our favorite toy store FAO Schwarz. I want it to be a weekend that is memorable for all of us. I want it to be fun. I want to see them laugh and jump with excitement.

Weekends with just the girls don’t come around often, so I want to make the most of our time together.
