3 Steps to the Perfect Red Lip

A red lip is ALWAYS on trend no matter what the season or latest makeup buzz. I love red lips for summer since the bold color goes perfectly with warm weather hues like jewel tones, whites, and my favorite, turquoise. A go-to red lipstick is definitely a beauty product that every woman should have in her beauty bag!

The keys to a perfect red pout are simple but require more than just puckering up:

STEP 1: Make sure your lips are hydrated! Cracked and peeling lips will make your lipstick bleed and look uneven. Dry lips are also a sign that you’re dehydrated so be sure to drink plenty of water and apply lip moisturizer or balm to maintain healthy skin. To get a long lasting finish, apply a primer, which can also help smooth out the lips.

STEP 2: Apply a red lip liner. If you’re not using a primer, apply liner over your entire lips. Liner helps control the flow of color to the defined lip area and prevents feathering. Just be sure to choose a lip liner shade in nude or one that will compliment the lipstick you are using!

STEP 3: Apply a red lipstick that works well with your skin tone. Finding the right shade can be a bit of trial and error (fun too!) but there are a few rules of thumb: Blue-based reds (cool) typically pair better with pale to medium skin tones and orange-based reds (warm) with olive and dark tones. There are universal reds that strike a good balance but they sway towards cool and tend to be deeper in color.
